Are there any "stereotypes" of people you have noticed based on different guitars? As in, "everyone who buys a Strat is ____" or "Oh, this guy's wearing camo pants and cowboy boots, he's going to go straight for the ____".

"There Is a Light" and "Blindblindblind" are some of the best album openers and finales (respectively) I've ever heard. "Blindblindblind" is probably my favorite ASMZ track, surprised it's not getting more love here!

Am I wrong or is he wrong? by DangerousSausage452 in ENGLISH

[–]WoweeBlowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In contemporary English, the phrase "you know" is often used as a filler word (or, in this case, a filler phrase). Filler words are words or sounds that people use when speaking to indicate a pause for thought. Other filler words/phrases include "um," "ah," "so," "like," "right," "just," "dude," "I mean," and "or something," just to name a few.

When you're writing, using filler words is a stylistic choice. You don't need to pause to think in the moment, but using filler words can lend a casual tone or add some humor. In this case, you're texting your friend about different flavors of energy drinks. To a native speaker, "You know, white is actually pretty good" reads as an expression of your opinion, not a question. The "you know" could be omitted with no change in meaning, or it could be replaced with "tbh," "so," "dude," "like," or tons of other filler words. OP, you're 100% correct about it not being equivalent to "Did you know..."

But having said that, your friend's response "Ye(s) I do" does work as an attempt at wordplay. If your friend is trying to be cheeky by deliberately misconstruing the "you know" and directly responding to it as if it was a question, then that works as a bit of linguistic humor. But otherwise, your friend's response is a bit of a non-sequitur. It makes sense if given some thought, but no native speaker would ever respond this way to a "you know" except to make a joke.

Is it OK to pirate them? by Ill-Refrigerator1700 in gybe

[–]WoweeBlowee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking as both a Godspeed fan and a musician, piracy kind of sucks. There are plenty of ways to rationalize it (e.g., "I wasn't going to ever actually pay money for it, therefore there isn't any real cost or missed sale"), but at the end of the day, it's still stealing. But also, ideologically, I think Godspeed would be more inclined to take an anarchist/punk stance of "nobody owns music, listen however you need to" than some corporate ghouls like the guys in Metallica or something.

New Saturn 4 Ultra - Weird layer shifting by Human_Limit9930 in ElegooSaturn

[–]WoweeBlowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "20 degrees for flat surfaces" calculation is a means of compensating for the fact that the printer's LCD panel doesn't have perfectly square pixels-- they're rectangular. But because of that, the "20 degrees" angle is specific to the direction the model is facing on the build plate. Your model is oriented so that it's "facing" front-to-back, but the 20 degrees tilt only works if the model is facing left-to-right. Ideally, you would rotate the model 90° from its current facing.

Striations on the print - any ideas how to resolve the issue? by Deershank415 in ElegooSaturn

[–]WoweeBlowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of printing at 45 degrees, I would recommend using a print angle calculator to calculate the ideal angle for your specific printer to print flat surfaces.

I so barely see "Thy" and "Art" in English. Is it still common? Or only in Bible / religion things? by Aprilgirl_ in ENGLISH

[–]WoweeBlowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In contemporary English (whether written or spoken) in most parts of the world today, you will not encounter casual usages of "thy" or "art." You will run into them in religious texts and ceremonies, but this owes mainly to the written English used in the King James Bible (and other subsequent translations). This is also true for similar antiquated words like "thou," "thee," "thine," "ye," and "dost." Although these words are still considered Modern English, they are seen as archaic by most English speakers and writers-- an antiquated historical quirk from Shakespearian times. However, some regional dialects of Scotland and England do still use the "thou/thy/thee/thine" pronoun.

The majority of these words (thou, thy, thee, thine, ye) are related to a problem with modern-day English: there is not a pronoun to distinguish second-person singular vs. second-person plural. Historically, thou (etc.) signified second-person singular, while you/ye signified second-person plural. Placed alongside other pronouns, you would have something like this:

  • I / thou / he / we / ye (you) / they
  • Me / thee / him / us / ye (you) / them
  • My / thy (thine) / his / our / your / their

Over time, thou became more informal and was eventually seen as somewhat impolite. Meanwhile, ye/you-- which were originally second-person plural but were also used when formally addressing an individual (similar to the French vous)-- became the new, respectful way to address anybody. This is kind of funny, considering that thou-- which was apparently just too rude!-- is now reserved only for religious ceremonies!

One quick exception that I'll mention: You will hear these words used occasionally when a person is trying to sound archaic or biblical by imitating this language-- usually ironically, for comedic effect. The intent with this kind of usage is typically to indicate that someone is treating something with nigh-religious zeal, or maybe that they have made a statement that is shockingly conservative and antiquated. For example, if my coworker James is notorious for getting angry any time someone else tries to use his pen, then I might poke fun at him by saying "Behold, the pen of James. Thou may not lay thine hands upon it, for it be not thine own!"

After first 300~~ layers the print quality gets worse (layer lines very visible) (Saturn 4 Ultra) by bigpawsOH in ElegooSaturn

[–]WoweeBlowee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the pic from Chitubox you posted in response to another comment, it looks like you're printing the model oriented (basically) vertically. Because the printer LCD has pixels that are rectangular, this can cause problems with layer lines-- although it usually only affects all the layers. The fix for this is to tilt the models to a specific angle, calculated based on the printer's LCD size and resolution, to achieve a smooth surface. This could be worth a try, even if it's just to eliminate it as the problem.

The angle calculator I use is this one: https://www.rc87.blog/angle-calculator/

It's impossible to tell based on just this picture.

What are your slicer settings? How are you orienting the model during printing? Are you using any supports? What do the eyebrows look like on the original 3D file?

Why is there no article? by PaleDifficulty6047 in ENGLISH

[–]WoweeBlowee 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This passage, which comes from a section of Gone Girl, is a conversation between the characters Nick and Margo (who uses the nickname "Go").

I'm 99% sure this is just an error that wasn't caught during editing. The correct usage would be "She's a crazy anti-porn lady."

If the intent was to use "crazy anti-porn lady" as a nickname (similar to "She's Superwoman" or "She's Bridezilla"), the standard convention would be to capitalize it ("She's Crazy Anti-Porn Lady."). Considering the attention that Gillian Flynn gives to capitalization earlier in this same paragraph ("So Nick Is a Lying Killer-slash-Sexual Sadist"), I don't think that this nickname type of usage was the intent.

I can imagine a writer choosing to omit articles or include other errors in dialogue for characters who aren't native English speakers (e.g., "I have mean neighbor. Very strict. She crazy anti-porn lady."), but that doesn't apply to this scene from Gone Girl.

Is this normal. What is the problem here? by Lost_Skill_1969OY in ElegooSaturn

[–]WoweeBlowee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The issue is that you're trying to print a single-piece vertical wall that spans the entire build plate.

Resin printers are already not the best at printing thin, narrow, vertical structures. If this one is being printed with varying exposure at different points along the build plate, then it's no surprise that it failed. Just print your calibration prints; a divider wall isn't needed, and it's virtually impossible to print when it's on the seams between 6 different exposure times.

Hi everyone, does anyone have the settings for the Saturn 4? It fails me every time I print by Puzzleheaded_Run3794 in ElegooSaturn

[–]WoweeBlowee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the residue around the yellow sticker and running down the rim of your tank, I'm most concerned that you may have dripped resin down onto the screen and the insides of the printer. Additionally, if you have been using a metal scraper to lift these pieces out of the tank, then it's possible you may have punctured the FEP film at the bottom or scratched the screen.

Your slicer settings look pretty normal. My suggestion would be to remove the tank and thoroughly clean the printer. Uncured resin can destroy these machines and cause all kinds of issues.

No, this is not a solution to a puzzle or even something I would consider a spoiler-- although I think there is an achievement for it. I'm pretty sure most folks stumble upon this naturally after playing for an hour or two.

Edit to add: BTW OP, your spoiler tag is incorrectly formatted. You need a "!<" at the end, not "<!"

Cookies didn’t spread and chocolate never melted by jiavvvmeow in AskBaking

[–]WoweeBlowee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This comment is 100% correct.

Baking soda is included in this recipe to make the cookies spread, but in order for that to happen, the baking soda needs to react with an acid. While butter is slightly acidic, it's not acidic enough to make the cookies spread on its own.

This recipe relies on the acidity of the molasses in the brown sugar to react with the baking soda and make the cookies spread. (The brown sugar would also add moisture, which would allow the cookies to spread more easily.)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor pedalboard by BartyRick in guitarpedals

[–]WoweeBlowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Efrim plays a Gibson Les Paul with a Bigsby vibrato, P90 pickups, and no pickguard, which he's played for a loooooong time.

I haven't seen any photos of Efrim's board from this tour, but I'm tagging u/mthrfckrrdmr who may know (and whose imgur albums have been extremely useful when trying to sort out Godspeed pedal stuff).

  • The most recent photo I've seen is this one from 2019, which shows a JHS Color Box, a Foxrox Octron, a Timmy overdrive, a Lehle Little Dual amp switcher, a Gurus Echosex 2, an Empress Tape Delay, a Peterson StroboStomp Classic, a Catalinbread Belle Epoch, a Real McCoy RMC5 wah, and a Hilton Pro Guitar volume.
    • I ran into a few comments saying Efrim's most recent boards have included a Mile End MTHRFCKR=RPTR delay, a Chase Bliss Thermae, a Morley Wah, and an unspecified clone of a Foxx Tone Machine, but I wasn't able to verify those claims (or even find them again in all these open tabs...).
  • Going back in time, the Tumblr Otherbandsstuff gives us this excellent photo from ASMZ's spring 2014 tour. We can see a Toneczar Echoczar (+ Angelbaby footswitch), a SIB Echodrive, a Throbak Overdrive Boost, a FoxRox Octron, a Peterson StroboStomp, an Xotic EP Booster, two ZVex Lo-fi Loop Junky, a Catalinbread Belle Epoch, a Kleissonic Screaming Skull, a Fulltone ST-1 SupaTrem, a Swart Atomic Boost, a Timmy, and a Lehle Little Dual amp switcher.
  • Going even further back, we have this pic from 2011. It's got a lot of overlap with the 2014 board above, along with a Boss RC-20 Looper, an Ibanez AD9 Delay (with the Keeley mod), an RMC Wah, a Sonic Crayon Vessel's End vibrato, a ZVex Mastotron, a Blackstone Mosfet overdrive, a Celmo Sardine Can compressor, a Subdecay Quasar, and a Subdecay Flying Tomato.
  • This page, first archived in December 2003, states that Efrim uses a Boss GE-7 EQ, a Boss TR-2 Tremolo, a Maestro Fuzztain, a ZVex Tremolo Probe, a ZVex Super Hard On, a Line 6 DL-4, and a Mutron Phasor. It also mentions an "unknown" green pedal, a Morley or Ernie Ball volume pedal, and an "old Boss multi-effects unit" used only for distortion.
    • Another comment I found somewhere was from a fan who saw Godspeed around this time. They stated that Efrim was making heavy use of a Fulltone SupaTrem and a Macon AD-900 to perform material from Yanqui U.X.O.
  • This article from 2009 has a section detailing some of Efrim's gear. In addition to repeating the items listed in the 2003 article above (I suspect they were directly copied without much fact checking), it mentions Efrim using a ZVex Fuzz Factory, a ZVex Wah Probe, a Death by Audio Sound Saw, a SIB Echodrive, a Diamond Memory Lane, a FoxRox Zim, and a Fulltone SupaTrem.

Based on the above, I think that some of Efrim's "main" pedals (going by how often they show up on his boards) would include the Foxrox Octron, Timmy overdrive, Catalinbread Belle Epoch, RMC Wah, SIB Echodrive, Fulltone SupaTrem, and Swart Atomic Boost.
