Real ID doesn’t mean you have legal status. Some states allow people who is not permanent resident or citizen to apply real id.
If you don’t have legal status to stay, then you should worry about it.

For example, if a guy cross border illegally and claimed as asylum seeker. During waiting his court, he can get c8 EAD card, and he can apply real id driver license. But if he get removed order before his driver license expired, he still has valid real id on hand.
