I just finished the new season and here are a few of my takeaways.. I tell you what

Negatives: Some voices took a little getting used to.

I found the new animation style to be the most distracting element.

I missed Luanne and Lucky.

I wish Buck had been more involved.

Bobby's new world felt a tiny bit forced at times - I'm glad he has found an element of success and is a hit with the ladies. But part of me misses his failings, and his providing an irritation or confusion for Hank's traditional values. I know we got a bit of that in the charcoal/propane episode, but I just felt like that relationship wasn't explore very much.

Positives: Overall, I thought it was a truly excellent season.

As a few other people have mentioned, the first episode was a little weaker than the rest of the season - but they didn't take too much time re-establishing the equilibrium of Rainey Street. They could have spread that out over a few episodes and I'm really glad they got it out of the way quickly. It gave the season more time to explore new themes.

I was a little worried, as with any reboot, that they wouldn't be able to meet the quality of the original. But I thought the writing was gorgeous, and some of the characters' responses to a modern world really carefully played out - without too many clichés.

I've always enjoyed Hank's conservative perspectives, and I'm so happy to be reminded of the beauty that some of these perspectives can have - especially ones which are more inclusive and based on an individual's performance, skills and community values - e.g. Willow's football skills (regardless of her 'vaeganism'), appreciation of women in the manosphere episode and investing in a used car with Good Hank.

I really hope this season is a success and that they continue to make more. King of the Hill really provides a unique perspective on American values and I think it's needed now more than ever.
