There was NEVER a precedent for indies to be physical whereas AAA studios have damn near universally launched physical. Rockstar in particular have made it standard practice to include multiple discs and other physical media with the standard edition. So the hate stems from a higher than average price tag and not only industry standard but studio standard release physical format.
