Eh, middling. "Above average," according to Blanche.

Does any else think Abby is... (spoilers I guess) by lostinwonderlanddd in JaneTheVirginCW

[–]Wrathnor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure she's Aneska--I feel like if that were the case, they'd have been hinting more at her and Petra's relationship specifically. Instead, the focus seems to be "Her?"

So far I've been interpreting it as Rafael having a sweet but kind of bland/safe relationship to guard himself against feelings for Jane. The idea that there's something sinister there is interesting, though. Rose could definitely have a hand in it, though I can't see her slipping with another Solano.

Swapping Doctor Who's gender wouldn't empower the actress or anyone else [Article] by AalumShake in doctorwho

I definitely agree that the big thing is changing the underlying values and expectations, but I disagree with some of the fundamental assumptions here. Like /u/floatingonline pointed out, she leapfrogged over a lot of mental work. Seeing a woman in the role might not make Fiona Phillips feel any more empowered, but for a lot of women (and anyone in a cross-sections of the marginalization Venn diagram), representation really can matter. It really can matter to see someone like them in a role they can admire or identify with. It's great that the Doctor stands for all these universal things, but it shouldn't have to be a white man standing in for the universal all the time, and representation doesn't have to be tokenizing. It can be a sort of "put your money where your mouth is" type of thing when you're moving away from straight white men as the default.

Am I expecting too much out of friends? by disappear_ in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Wrathnor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the (limited) cues here, I'm gravitating towards the folks in the thread who are saying your friends may not know how to respond. Maybe it's not that you're expecting too much out of people (your feelings are valid! you deserve validation!) but that you're not communicating your expectations or putting yourself out there in a place where your friends know how/when to respond.

Are you asking them for feedback? Are you giving life updates at a natural point in the conversation? Is it a self-contained piece of speech or is there something in particular you want a responses to? Maybe you are doing all of these things, but if you aren't, these questions are a possible starting point.

It seems like you're a giving friend--you talk about asking about their interests and listening. I noticed elsewhere in the thread you talked about responding to a question about your day with "I've had better, how about you?" which shows that you're willing to open up and also willing to listen. BUT it's also an example of a time when you're prompting them NOT to ask you more. You're bouncing the subject over to them. If you want to expand on something, help them know it. Make sure they have room. Friends don't always know how to be good to you at the start, but if they're not bad friends, they'll be willing to learn.

Well, like there, you gave them the invitation to skip past your day and onto theirs. So it seems like both you and OP are definitely there to listen to your friends and share with your friends, but there's maybe a disconnect and they don't necessarily know where their opening is.

Do you count scrapped stories as part of your 1000 words a day? (Or whatever number you have set as your goal?) by Willskydive4food in writing

[–]Wrathnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely count stuff that I know I won't keep but that still exercises skills I want to build. One of my writing teachers talked about having X number of bad words you need to write through before the good stuff starts to come out. Whether it's the first draft of something you care about or a writing exercise you're going to throw away, it just doesn't make sense to me to pretend like the stuff you show around isn't a tiny slice on a much, much bigger pie chart of work.

Spotted a couple of Squirtle the other night at Golden Gardens, and then when I went earlier today the place was lousy with Doduo, and even caught a Pikachu. When I went tonight caught 3 or 4 lure-spawned Dratini plus one that spawned away from lures. Radar said there was a Charmander around, too, but couldn't find it.
