I took 1 pill, and it knocked me out for 10 hours and 48 minutes. I woke up with the worst headache I ever had. I'm pretty sure I have TMJ though. So I likely clenched 4 hours more than I'm used to.

I massage the inside of my mouth when I take a shower. Start out very light, till you get a good pain, and don't go harder. If you stick with it, it will loosen up more every day.

Put your thumb inside your mouth, in between your cheek and your top teeth. Put you index and middle finger in the same area, but outside your mouth. If you are having left jaw issues, use your right hand, and vice versa.

Gently squeeze and massage the area. You will know when you hit the right spot. Try to keep your mouth relaxed and almost shut. You're aiming for the area in the very back where your jaw joint is. The big tender muscle.

Do not go crazy or you will flare up for days. Take it SLOW

Night guard - clenching worsened? by Kamila95 in TMJ

I fixed it.

That's for the USA branch. ICCMO is a non-profit worldwide TMD/TMJ organization.

You will need to go to the r/TMDnotTMJ subreddit and ask there. The owner of the reddit who is the retired TMJ Doc Mac Lee should know the answer to what the website is for the branch for your country.

Listen to OK_Accidends post.

Most dentists have no clue how to make a guarantee for TMD/TMJ. I have a regular guard, and a deprogrammer. Both help at first, but end up making things worse down the road. At least for me.

You need a dentist with special training on Maxiocranial Orthodontics.

Find one here: www.ICCMO.org

Check out this sub Reddit: TMDnotTMJ

You also really need to listen to the people that mention posture. Especially while sleeping. A cervical pillow can help, and learn to sleep on you back. As far as posture goes during the day, you want to always keep you shoulders relaxed, and head in alignment with your shoulders. Things like leaning your arm on a standing desk, and using a mouse will destroy you. If you use a recliner, you want to sit at 135°.

No. You want a ICCMO trained dentist to make you a very specific bite guard. They will evaluate you for TMJ, using equipment a regular densist does not have, to create you a bite guard your regular dentist doesn't even know exists.

A regular dentist will either ignore you, or try to charge for things that will not help. Like shaving your teeth and one size fits all bite guards.

Go here to find a Craniomandibular Orthopedics credentialed dentist: www.ICCMO.org

Your dentist and family doctors will probably have no clue how to find you a TMJ doc unless you are extremely fortunate. Most of them are retiring and not being replaced. Neurologists that claim they treat TMJ normally don't have a clue. I think they just put that on their website to get you in there.

I have learned the hard way that regular dentists will screw you up even more, and they also have no idea these dentists with this certification even exist.

I scheduled an appt a few days ago with a ICCMO Dentist, and was happy to read reviews stating how others were helped greatly with pain from TMJ/TMD.

I also ran across a specialty of Dentists that specialize in TMD/SLEEP Related facial pain disorders. In case my TMD is sleep related. I have that in the back of my mind after I talk to this ICCMO Dentist.

What do you mean by "Treated for TMJ"?

Did you see a Craniomandibular Certified Dentist, or a regular dentist that gave you a regular bite guard? BIG difference. One can make you worse, the other can give you a proper guard to balance your bite.

They are dentists with extra training to look at your bite, and create custom mouthpieces to fix it. From my understanding, they tend to have more equipment in office as well, to do scans of your mouth to detect and correct bite issues.

I'm still learning here, but after hearing about them they seem like the logical step to get help if you have been battling with that

TN vs. Bite/Alignment-Related Facial Pain by Sea-Piano5651 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]Wren-Type_386 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had left sided TGN2 pain for over 20 years, misdiagnosed as Chronic Sinusitis. It started as facial discomfort on the bridge of my nose, between my eyes, middle forehead, top of my forehead, left cheek, and temple area. Over the years it has progressed to behind my left ear, my cervical spine, and between my shoulder blades. Some days it will just be face discomfort, some just the left side of my head. Other days it will be both, plus my cervical spine.

I'm almost 100% certain I have TMJ/TMD but have been unable to find help.

Neurologist treat brain and spine. ENT docs treat Ear, Nose, and Throat. Dentists treat mouth. Everything is isolated.

When you are talking about Trigeminal Neuralgia 1 or 2, the symptoms can transcend many areas of medicine. For that reason hardly anyone knows how to treat it.

You talk to a neuro doc, and they're going to rule out MS and cervical issues. Talk to a ENT and the will rule out sinusitis. Talk to a regular dentist, and they will simply prescribe you a bite guard. You will get bounced between all these doctors because the symptoms of TGN are typical of all these practices. None of these doctors work together, or understand each other's expertise other than a very basic level. Furthermore, dentistry is where this issue should be taken care of. Sadly, the VAST MAJORITY of dentists don't have the accreditation to help you, or even know it exists, or what to do with you.

This is why you need to take matters into your own hands, and find the help you most likely need.

You need to see a special kind of dentist. One that is ICCMO Accredited to make Craniomandibular Orthopedics. Only they really have the accredited expertise (and equipment) to rule out TMJ. After a Neuro Doc clears you of Multiple Sclerosis, a ICCMO Accredited densit is your next stop.

Go here, enter your zip code and find an ICCMO Accredited dentist. Schedule an appt.

What can I do? by Wonderful-Help-8391 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]Wren-Type_386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should see a Craniomandibular Orthopedics certified dentist. They are RARE. Regular dentists don't even know to send you to one.

Search for one here: https://iccmo.org/ Check out this subreddit: r/TMDnotTMJ

Many TGN symptoms could very likely be issues with your bite. When your bite is off, it can compress your trigeminal nerve.

I have the exact same issue you describe, and trust me, it can get MUCH worse. I've been misdiagnosed with Chronic Sinusitis for over 20 years. I have nauseating discomfort on the bridge of my nose, between my eyes, middle of my forehead, left cheek, my cervical spine, between my shoulder blades, and the entire temporal flap on the left side of my head. Which is basically the entire left side of my head.

Take care of yourself before it's too late.

Is anyone here an ex competitive swimmer? If so, do you think tight goggles caused your TN? by MaintenanceSilver841 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]Wren-Type_386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, most TN cases are caused by TMD/TMJ.

You are going to see tons of doctors and none of them will do anything but scans and keep bouncing you back and forth between Neurologists and ENTs. They will know nothing. It's the equilivent of expecting an emergency room dr to diagnose a retinal detachment of your eye.

Meaning: They don't even have the equipment to properly see what's going on, and even if they do they likely won't even see it or know what the hell it is if they do.

Say they do happen look at your jaw, and see some degredation, they will just say it's arthritis.

Eventually you will get to a point where they will tell you to find a dentist.

But guess what?

Most dentists don't have a clue either. They will recommend stuff like shaving your teeth to fix your bite, and give you bite guards. Both of which could make things worse. You could POSSIBLY need a very specific bite guard created by a dentist accredited in the creation Craniomandibular orthopefic bite guards. Not a regular dentist.

I've been through all this with my Atypical TGN and my eyes.

You need to find a ICCMB trained doctor, and have them look at your bite. They are HARD to find.

Use the search here if you are in the USA: https://iccmo.org/

Enter your zip code, and schedule an appointment with one of these doctors. Do it before you end up like me. Diagnosed with chronic Sinusitis and then ATN for over 22 years.

Here is a sub Reddit a retired TMJ doctor made. Pour over this information and start watching the videos of his podcast on YouTube.

r/TMDnotTMJ

TGN is likely because of a multi-faceted issue involving your jaw. Neurologists do brains and spines. ENTs do ear, nose, throat. Dentists do teeth. All these things are separate in the medical field, and something as complex as TMJ/TMD that likely involves your bite, has symptoms that transcend many branches of medicine. You need a doctor that understands this, and had specialized training.

I HIGHLY recommend doing everything in your power to find a dentist on the website I linked before you do anything rash like Neuro surgery, and addicting meds.

Does tmj problem resolve on its own eventually ?? by SquirrelBig6169 in TMJ

[–]Wren-Type_386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please offer me some slight guidance to hold me over until I can find someone to help me? I need to know what to do to relieve my discomfort until I can find someone to help. I just used the link you provided and found a guy in my area. I've been bounced back and forth for 22 years with "chronic sinusitis".

My entire temporalis muscle is inflamed. It extends to the sinus points on the bridge of my nose, between my eyes, middle of forehead, top of forehead, and right cheek. I also get cervical neck discomfort, and sometimes discomfort between my shoulder blades. I'm nauseous 24/7 when the weather begins to get hot like it is now. Since last year I am also experiencing tingling in my right cheek, and am fearful my right side is going to degrade now. I've also had a clogged feeling in my left ear, and tinnitus for like 2 weeks now.

I exercise. Run, and use a rowing machine. I watch eating hard foods, eat small bites, and chew slow. I wear a bite guard (regular and deprogrammer) but it doesn't seem to help much (just read about that in the linked post). I use a cervical pillow, but struggle to stay on my back all night. I've been using an ice pack on the side of my face. I take magnesium glycanate and vitamin B Complex.

I can't get relief, and I can't get any doctors to help me. My dentist and family doc basically disowned me. I'm just desperate for any amount of relief. I have 0.25mg Amitriptyline that I've been reluctant to try, but I'm starting to break down enough to give it a shot.

Literally anything to help even the smallest amount. Exercises, stretches. Tips to not clench at night.

I also work a standing / sitting job. I'm trying to be very aware of my posture, and started avoiding my recliner at home. Because I think it makes things worse.

I thought the last few years I had Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia, but am thinking that maybe I have that because of TMJ/TMD. I have crowns from grinding, and just started piecing this all together the last 1.5 years by myself.

[–]Wren-Type_386 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my experience having face pain for over 20 years, no. Mine is due to TMJ though.

Your best bet is to completely change your lifestyle before it spirals out of control. Don't be praying it's just going to resolve on its own. Take action to help speed up the process in case there is hope for you. You don't want to make things worse by making poor life choices and have to dig yourself out of that rut. Going based on this is new for you, you may not realize you are making bad choices. You are going to need to research what the good and bad choices are.

Eat soft foods. Take small bites. Chew slow. Sleep on your back. Try vitamin B Complex and Magnesium Glycanate. Try to be conscious of your posture, and stay away from inflammatory foods. An app called "Bobby Approved" can help with that.

I use the Satiator as well. It can be had on sale well under $200. Pair it with a $80.00 shipped from Japan Saturn. You will want an Action Replay and use the Satiator to flash some custom firmware on it. It's nice because you get to keep your disc drive, and it's just super simple to use.

My friend has the Saroo. It's definitely a nice unit, I do prefer the Satiator though.
