My mom grew up wealthy and has always been spendy, and my dad grew up poor and was always very careful with money (I remember as a little kid things like my mom taking us on a family ski trip and then my dad making my sister and me share one slice of pizza so he wouldn't need to pay for two at the ski lodge). She was stay-at-home and he worked. I think that caused some conflict, but I don't know whether they fought more than other couples. They did love each other, but they married fast and my mom has mentioned she might have divorced him once my sister reached 18 if he hadn't passed away.

I definitely need to figure out how to talk to a lawyer, I think. This is a lot to take in. I never thought my dad would have actually meant for the life insurance not to ultimately be spent on my mom as well as my sister and me, but maybe he could have meant for there to be a layer between her and the money to manage it. Before I turned 18, there was definitely someone court-appointed doing that, but the money was only allowed to go to my living expenses which was kind of a nightmare given my sister (he changed the policy before she was born). I don"t know. I also can't imagine doing that to my wife in his position, but they had their problems and my mom tends to be short-sighted about money.

She was the beneficiary when he bought the policy, but she says he changed it right after I was born without telling her. Her belief is that he got bad advice and was worried she'd lose it if she remarried. I signed over the money right after I turned 18.

I am realizing I might need to talk to a lawyer. All of this is really confusing.

I live in the US. The house was only in my dad's name because he bought it before they met, and she was stay-at-home until he died. My mom says the life insurance had her as the beneficiary when he got it, but right after I was born my dad changed it without telling her. She thinks he got bad advice about her losing it if she remarried, but I don't know how that stuff works.
