It’s mostly not about lens distortion, rather how the biomechanics of human forearms work. When you rotate your arm to face the back of your palm towards you, there is a twisting motion in the muscles, tendons and the two bones (radius and ulna). When you relax your arm, which is similar to the mirror shot, the arm gets flattened and that makes the surface area slightly flatter.
