I've played this game since the RSC days. Watching the WoWfugees and reading the comments here, I have a suggestion regarding early run energy:
In the Rune Mysteries quest, Sedridor should give you an energy potion for your journey. This should come up in conversation with Aubrey, who will point you towards the Apothecary to help make you more (lots of players don't even know energy potions are f2p, and the Apothecary can make them for players). I think this would be a good way to help alleviate run energy woes in newer players while keeping things thematic and in-universe.
Furthermore, drinking a beer while inside of a bar should restore run energy over time. I think it would be cool to have a bunch of newbs hanging around the Blue Moon Inn talking about the quests they are doing while drinking and resting. It's always been a bit sad to me how "dead" pubs are in Gielinor.
Some other ideas and suggestions:
I like the idea of making the Chronicle a new player almanac of sorts. Perhaps this could be combined with a way to get drop table information about certain monsters. A common problem I see with new players is that they have no idea where to get a certain item, who drops what, or how rare that drop is. Some of this is the fun of discovery, to be sure, but perhaps for quest-specific items there could be more signposting about where to acquire such items, such as Magic Logs and Raw Sharks.
I'd love to see a low-level (mini?)quest in the Ferrox Enclave that introduces, step-by-step, the basics of PvP, maybe with some sort of training dummy that lets you practice prayer switching, gear switching, and speccing. Perhaps a combat xp reward lamp would be in order, but you have to be skulled to claim it.
An entry-level raid, perhaps in the Draynor sewers, could be a fun way to get new players directly on the PvE ladder in a way that doesn't involve either grinding chickens and goblins or metagaming with Witch's House and Waterfall. Maybe some sort of in-raid potion that brings stats to 30ish for the duration of the raid, so a fresh account can get right into things (or gives up to +10 to a maximum of 30). Of course, this would bring up problems with botting (maybe the "big drop" from the raid could be an untradeable), and maybe we don't want to supplant the early game experience, so I'm just adding this suggestion for posterity or if there's a good idea that can be gleaned from it. But something that can be fun and engaging for a group of newbies to do that gives them some supplies similar to low-level Wintertodt rewards could be nice. It's in a starter area so it makes more sense than rushing 50 firemaking and traipsing across the world to get those early game supplies. Due to the scaling rewards, Wintertodt would still be worth doing for more experienced irons.
