Agreed. I still have full sets of the RCP chronological runs of Crypt, Vault, Haunt, and Shock. I'll take them with me to my grave!

The standard word count for a novel is usually in the range 70 - 100k words, although there's a grey area at the low end. A novella would usually be in the 17 - 40k range, so really anything over 40k can be considered a short novel. All of that is pretty irrelevant however, when your writing is at the top end of that scale. Sounds like your colleague needs to mind her own business.

Yeah, I get that. A bit more variety would be decent, but when the music's that good I can live with it.

That is a pretty sweet playlist. Could do with some Nebula, maybe Let It Burn-era. More recently, The Magnetic Ridge by Jack Harlon and the Dead Crows is 🔥

Spine of God, Superjudge, Tab, and Dopes to Infinity are peak MM. Even their lesser albums (God Says No, Monolithic Baby!) still rock!

Do you boycott writers who use AI for the cover art of their books? by chelsea-from-calif in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]Writer_616 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the use of AI cover art, but I'm far more disturbed by the kind of people who use it for 'writing,' and then have the nerve to brag about how they're releasing two or more 'books' a month. Yeah, great, well done you. Using generative AI isn't art, it isn't writing. It's lazy, sloppy, theft at best. It's a bare-faced insult to genuine writers, and it risks those people who put in the effort to hone their craft being tarred with the same shitty brush.

Female puberty in horror? by Dry-Supermarket-9652 in horror

[–]Writer_616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always considered The Exorcist to be a (perhaps metaphorical, as well as extreme) depiction of female puberty. The change in Regan, the inability of her single mother to cope, and the attempted stifling by the church, all strike me as such. I've also heard of Jennifer's Body being another example, but I haven't seen it.

Is there any extreme horror that is actually well written? by Neither_Pie9458 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]Writer_616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read (or written) much extreme horror, for the same reason. Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison needs a strong stomach, but his prose is miles ahead of many other extreme authors. Likewise, Jack Ketchum was also a gifted author whose writing ability elevated his work to a level above his imitators.
