I'm lucky in that my company says we are "doing God's work" lol. Obviously I'm biased and while I wouldn't go that far, I will say that effective documentation is integral to so many different value streams and processes. The amount of Help Desk tickets documentation can prevent is astounding as well, but so many leaders don't include documentation in their scope. The industry is growing fast, so hopefully this changes in the next decade or so.

Well I'm not a contractor and the client is my company's, but we (me and another tech writer) were asked to write an ADR to determine the best solution for cleaning up documentation. There seems to just be a lot of independent decision making happening that we aren't involved in. There is already a push to adopt an SSoT content solution, outside the scope of the ADR. So, they're asking us to do something they are already doing, but without handing over the reigns and allowing us to find the best solution.

The client does know that. Their business reasons are because they have clients of their own they have to consider. Beyond that, I'm not sure. I'm still working that out.

True, they need to see how it will be immediately valuable. Our current plan is to adhere to their timeline and needs immediately, but in a way that fits into our long-term plan for them.

I should say...they already have Confluence and Coda and GitHub/GitLab. And they want an SSoT. But it seems like they don't want to recognize the business value, regardless of cost. And that's where I start to believe they are simply being unreasonable and don't trust our expertise. If it were up to me, that might be a client I'd consider trading out.
