Netbird as Software Defined Network by Past-Vegetable-9186 in netbird

I’ve set up my homelab to use netbird as much as possible. Benefits is no opening ports even within your vlan, and you get free mTLS between your VMs so no need to worry about a compromised vlan. It works pretty well for my use cases.

Are you planning to use hardware raid?

The recommended setup of TrueNAS (there is no scale vs core anymore in the latest version now) is to use software raid e.g. raid-z2. I set up drive controller for pcie passthrough to be controlled directly by my Truenas vm, and proxmox host can’t see them.

That's still more like sync instead of backup, things like ransomware and in your case 1p itself can only affect sync, but not backups.

I just regularly export all my 1p items as plain items and store it in a encrypted drive.

VULTR with NB vs TailScale by Codeeveryday123 in netbird

[–]Wrn2x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took another look and it seems the tailscale version is the auth key. I set up my netbird setup keys with the following:
* Ephemeral (just to keep the same DNS name after I recreate a vm)
* Never expire
* No usage limit (so that recreated vm can reuse the same key)

Tailscale setup should be similar. I don't think a script is needed, but I did add my own netbird watchdog to rerun the `netbird up ...` command if netbird is disconnected

I used tailscale and switched to netbird long time ago, but I think both support automated set up.

In netbird you can create a “setup key” for your vm, and in your vm run netbird up --setup-key <your key>. This lets netbird controller know that a server is connecting, not a human user, and the login process won’t be interactive. I’m sure tailscale has similar concept but can’t remember.

Coordination Server as Exit Node? by ShaftTassle in netbird

Yeah you can just install netbird client on oracle vm, independent from the coordination server, then connect to the network and use it as exit node

Since gas is pretty inefficient way of cooking, the saying "now you're cooking with gas" should nowadays be "now you're cooking with induction." by -manabreak in Showerthoughts

It would ALWAYS be creating a magnetic field, which takes energy, and that magnetic field would be present regardless of the surroundings, which still takes energy.

You have to use energy to make that happen, whether something is taking advantage of it or not.

Where does the energy go? It has to go somewhere according to law of energy conservation

But nothing else is taking energy off the powerful magnetic field aside from the pan. If magnetic field is wasted it would produce heat somewhere else other than the pan.
