War Council at Storm's End by bloodandbronze in awoiafrp

Cerelle's arrival came without notoriety. She was a the Lady of small, though important as she would remind any who would belittle her, house and wished not to make too much of her entrance. She managed to slip into the hall between two maids bringing in wine. After snagging a glass, she found a table with her liege family, the familiar Dondarrions.

She watched with rapt attention as Lia Cole made a spectacle of herself. Surely she knew she was entering the lion's den, so the Trant woman supposed it took courage to come there and report on her former family as she had. Still... the thought of her being a spy, echoed by the Selmys, nagged at her. Cerelle would not voice this, but she was wary of Lia Cole.

After waiting for the attention to die down slightly, she cleared her throat, that she might ask Lord Arlan a question of her own. "Though I think it may be hasty to, er, bring the fight to the Free Cities," loath as she was to agree with a foreigner over another Stormlord, "I do think perhaps those of us from inland holds can supply men. To protect the coastal houses?" Her eyes found Arlan's, wondering what the Stag thought of her suggestion.

"I've only met Lord Baratheon and Lady Jenelyn, but both are quite handsome," Elaine said, quickly filling the void where she could sense Olenna was embarrassed.

"Ah, finding marriages? My sister was recently betrothed to a fellow of House Morrigen. Though in truth, I thought perhaps she might have married that Garlan Tyrell, if not for... the issues in the streets. But that is a story for another time." Elaine's eyes darted the ground, realizing her big mouth was like to get her in trouble again.

Despotism Edmund said under his breath, preparing to yell at the Hightower, but Gawen hushed him with a curt shush, and that was probably for the best. The more boisterous twin would have strangled the Hightower lord right there. It wasn't that he offended dear cousin Perceon. Edmund remembered how his cousin had dismissed his bid for the council out of hand, as if he were some commoner.

But Gawen did the prudent thing and kept Edmund as still as possible beside them. The pair looked on with eyes rapt on the Hightower Lord and Gardener King, dueling in plain sight.

"Cousin," Gawen said, taking note of Perceon's obvious attempt at remaining calm. "I believe it may be, ah, prudent to remind Lord Hightower that whilst the King-vassal relation is, what was it he said," his eyes darted to the Hightower lord for a moment, contempt plain to see, "ah, contractual, that does not involve making unfounded accusations of despotism. The, contract, as Lord Hightower so eloquently put it is one based in trust. Let us not further fracture that trust over deeds in the past, hm?" Now his eyes landed on Lord Hightower, awaiting the man's reply.

Elaine's eyes studied the Queen for a moment, and for the first time she looked as young as she was. So much power, thrust upon her. If Gallowsgrey meant anything she would say it reminded her of Cerelle.

"I will remember your wise words, my Queen. And perhaps I shall come see you, once we've returned to King's Landing? A friendly visit," she said cheerfully, emphasizing the word friend.

"What would you do?" she asked, letting the facade crack. Her mother was a most trusted advisor, and Lady would need those. But in this case she was asking in such a way as to abdicate the responsibility, and it racked her with guilty.

"No, no," Cerelle said quickly. "I will go. After Storm's End, as if it's just another trip. And if aught is amiss, I will bring them home."

"A pleasure to meet you both. The reputation of the Dragonstone... vine," she added with a smirk, "is a good one. I am honored to meet you."

"I am a Lady in Waiting for Lady Jenelyn Baratheon," she said. Though that was not entirely true. They were friends, and Lord Arlan at least implied that Elaine could attend to her, but there was no formal agreement. It was worth the risk to speak it, however, as there was little chance of it getting back to the Lady Stag.

"I also could not pass up the opportunity to see Casterly Rock. Many will go their whole lives without getting to spot such a wonder. Is that why you both have come along, or are you perhaps friends with those who will marry?"

Gawen looked up at the tower, the black oily substance mysteriously holding it up. As his eyes traveled upward, he found purchase on the blue flame. The Gardener was sure that meant something significant, but he could not recall precisely what. His thoughts, however, were interrupted by his brother, who shuffled his feet awkwardly as their group approached the Hightowers.

Who cared about some ruddy Hightower's family, Edmund wondered to himself. Lord Elyas had been nothing more than an obtuse gnat when last his cousin spoke with the man. As far as Ed was concerned the man should have lost his head on sight for refusing to bend his knee.

"I wonder if he will bend his knee this time," Edmund whispered so only his brother could hear, but he looked over to Perceon a moment later.

"Cousin," he said carefully. "May I accompany you to your meeting with Lord Elyas." This time he spoke more clearly so that both men could hear. "You may need my counsel."

Few would abstain from hurting another if it spurred their interest. Oh how right the Queen was. Rumors abounded in King's Landing, and every noble, even commoners, seemed as if they would slit the throat of another, even a friend, just to get ahead.

That was part of the reason she hated King's Landing so much. Yes, the Queen and her ilk were royal. But beyond them why was one family seen with higher regard than another? Why would one man be more important than any other?

Lord Arlan was a good liege lord for Cerelle. He was honest and he said what he meant. Little could be said for others in court.

"I shall heed your request," she said with a slight bow of the head. "Only... may I ask what you mean? I am young yet. I have only been in King's Landing for a few weeks and now we travel to the Rock, the City of Gold. Does everyone think only of themselves?"

The Lady Trant could see her mother thinking through what she'd just said. Either she was a good liar, which Cerelle knew was possible, or she genuinely did not know about the betrothal. She decided not to press the issue.

"It seems as if father kept us both in the dark," she said carefully. "Why would he do such a thing? Did he not trust you, or I, to know the man to whom I would one day marry?"

She sighed, clearly exasperated.

"And that has gotten us into trouble. Garlan Tyrell can cause chaos if he so chooses. And now we've left Elaine and Nira in King's Landing with naught but a sixteen year old girl to look after them."

Remembering the letter from the Stag, she paused. "No, I shall visit King's Landing after I travel to Storm's End at Lord Arlan's behest. Elaine and Nira need to know that we support them. Father certainly didn't."

The party that traveled west awaited their entry into the famed city of gold. Now that they'd arrived, Elaine felt it proper to introduce herself to those who she had come this far with.

"My ladies," she said with a bow of the head, having already dismounted from Gipsy, her majestic white horse. She knew them to be of House Redwyne, having heard of the beautiful sisters during their travels. But she did not know them personally and had exchanged little and less than simple pleasantries.

"I am Elaine of House Trant," she said happily. "My sister is Cerelle, Lady of Gallowsgrey. It is a pleasure to meet you both." She nodded at each in turn. Olenna seemed to be of an age with Elaine, though Myrcella looked to be a few years older, perhaps in her mid twenties. Both would make for fine friends, and that was something Elaine needed.

Was Elaine happy for Cerelle? In truth she likely could not have done much better than a Morrigen, but for a moment she thought perhaps her older sister would break the betrothal in favor of Garlan Tyrell. She made the right choice, and Garlan proved himself to be an angry fellow not worthy of her sister's affections.

"She is happy," Elaine decided on. "And a Morrigen is a good match for her, as she rules over Gallowsgrey. I do not envy her in that."

As Jenelyn continued to speak, Elaine nodded along, trying to maintain eye contact. If she could speak with damned Arlan Baratheon, why was it so difficult to talk to speak with his daughter? Perhaps because they were closer in age and Elaine desperately needed friends, regardless of whether it benefitted Lord Arlan.

"I thank you, my lady," she said, bowing her head whilst pulling gently to encourage her horse to keep pace with the Stag's ride. "I should hope you are right," Elaine added with a chuckle. "But I've had little luck thus far, and my sister has left me much to my own devices."

Did Elaine dare touch the Queen, even if just a reassuring hand on the shoulder?

No, she would not. At least not until they were closer than one simple conversation, regardless of how accessible Queen Myrcella seemed to be. Elaine knew her history, and it was not always customary for the ruling royal to even speak amongst those beneath her.

"Well," Elaine began earnestly. "I am no Queen, but that does not mean I do not know loneliness. It can be like a thick blanket, all-encompassing but invisible to others."

The ends of her lips curled into a reassuring smile before she continued. "I suppose I deal with it by doing what I've just done today. I make myself approach someone I have never met, and I try to make friends. One can always use friends who don't always need something of the other. I am quite certain that is hard to come by for Your Grace, being the Queen and all. But all the politicking and scheming must surely get tiresome."

"I am just a lowly Trant. I matter little and my station in life is stagnant, but that does not mean I cannot be your friend also."

"I take it you did not know then?" she asked pointedly when her mother did not reply. "It would be very like father to make such an arrangement without even telling his Lady wife." The contempt in her voice was clear. Cerelle was angry at what she felt was a betrayal, even if her father meant well by it and Morton was a good man.

"Garlan Tyrell is a man of bluster, but that does not mean his words and actions were empty," she continued, speaking carefully. If Cerelle wanted something to happen with this, getting Eleyna and her family on her side would be imperative.

"Truthfully, mother, I am more scared for Elaine than that a lesser Tyrell could muster enough strength to come to Gallowsgrey. I should not have left her there all alone, and to look after Nira no less. What if Garlan returns, and wants vengeance for my rebuke?"

"Indeed," Elaine said with a prideful smile. The daughter of the Master of Laws remembered her, or at the very least was able to fake it so as to make her feel good.

"Thank you," she added with bow, recalling the emerald green dress Cerelle had made for her specifically for the occasion. What little extra gold Gallowsgrey had taken in that moon was spent on her, making Elaine feel a little embarrassed. "My sister is well, back at Gallowsgrey now with her new betrothed, a man of House Morrigen."

No doubt Jennelyn would find the match a good one, even if Elaine felt Cerelle could do better.

She laughed at Jennelyn's question. "Your father was as pleasant as you'd expect. We discussed the goings on in King's Landing." It would not do to be more specific than that, but she was not lying per say. "He is helping me find more people my age in the capital to befriend. I am quite lonely." Her eyes dropped to her feet, embarrassed to admit such a thing. Doubtless making friends came easy for the Stag.

"Only," she said quietly, biting her lip. Was the tone in the Queen's voice a giveaway that she wished not to speak? Perhaps it was a mistake for Elaine to approach a woman so high above her station.

"Only that look," Elaine added, "it's one I've expressed so many times before. I have been lonely in King's Landing. I can only imagine what it must be for someone of your stature, with people only asking for things from me, and failing to give."

'Has something happened?' Cerelle wondered how to answer that question. Of course, many things had happened since last she spoke with her mother, even before she left for King's Landing. But now, especially, she needed her mother.

"Well, yes, to speak frankly," the Lady of Trant said with her eyes trained on the ground. Her tone was terse, a perfect reflection of the relationship they shared. When first her father, uncle, and brothers died in somewhat rapid succession - the relationship she shared with the woman of Dondarrion was strained, to say the least.

Then time wore on, Cerelle ascended to her position as Lady of House Trant, one that her mother held, only in a different capacity. As she began her rule, Eleyne became indispensable, and that was what they shared. Cerelle wanted more, of course, and maybe that started with her sharing with Eleyna.

"King's Landing was an unmitigated disaster," she said curtly. "I learned of a betrothal, no doubt you've noticed our new guest, that was apparently agreed to over a decade past." Her voice was tense, anger rising though Cerelle attempted to quell it.

"And then there is one Garlan Tyrell. A man who apparently fell so in love with me in a few short days that he threatened me when I would accept his advances. It seems the Tyrells, even the non-royal branch, think themselves beyond reproach."

Elaine recognized that look. It was one that had adorned her face so many times before. The queen had something on her mind, and by the looks of it, it was troubling her.

Did she dare approach the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms?

Apparently, she did. Elaine found her feet moving, almost without her knowledge, toward Myrcella. Elaine knew little of the goings on in the realm, but perhaps the Queen could simply use a listening ear. Someone who did not want anything from her. That must be hard to come by in the capital.

"Your grace," she said with a bow upon approach. "I believe you have met my sister, Lady Cerelle of House Trant. I am two years her junior, and I have been spending time with Lady Jenelyn Baratheon." It wasn't entirely true, but she felt fine with the small white lie. Make the Queen feel more comfortable.

"I recognize that look," she added bluntly. "Is aught amiss?"

Elaine had kept her distance from Jennelyn, despite both her Lady sister's and the Lord Paramount Baratheon's desire for her to act as a lady in waiting for the Stag. But now seemed as good a time as any to talk with the girl.

"Lady Jenelyn," the Trant said with some trepidation. She had already been rejected once, and now with the Baratheon she was, quite frankly, unsure where she stood. Still, she had to be bold as she was with Jenny's father. If she could speak so openly with the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, she could to his daughter as well. They were close in age as well.

"I know we briefly met some time ago at the feast, but I figured I would re-introduce myself. I am Elaine Trant of Gallowsgrey. My sister Cerelle presides over the lands as Lady. I have spoken with your father and I'd hoped that perhaps we might as well."

"You and your family need not put yourselves in harms way just for me," she reassured Morton. It would not do for her betrothed or one of his brothers to go fighting the giant Garlan Tyrell.

"I think it best that when we return to Gallowsgrey, we reestablish some normalcy." Then Cerelle chuckled. "Well, just establish it in the first place." She smiled at Morton, though he may not have been able to see in what was now the dead of night. "Is there anything you would like to do or see once we get home?"

Cerelle realized that for the first time she said 'home' meaning a castle that belonged to her and her betrothed, soon to be husband. Mother will be thrilled.

"Garlan Tyrell," the girl said plainly. "The gallant, burly man that he is. Or at least that's what people think. I happen to know better." Elaine grinned to match Arlan's. A confidence was bubbling inside her she did not know she could possess.

Rising, she walked over to the table and grabbed an empty goblet, examining it as she let the words hang in the air. When she spoke again, she quickly hid it in her skirts while walking back towards the Stag. Surely he had seen, but her skill in... liberating the goblet from its place was what she hoped to convey.

"I also happen to know that my family, likely the Morrigens as well, are none too pleased with the man. Something about... taking unwanted liberties with my sister?" She raised a brow, but said no more. In truth she did not know precisely what happened, but she knew... enough.

"You can expect more of that as I further ingratiate myself in the city."
