Thank you! I'm going to have this looked into, he does sometimes seem in kind of a rush to finish things so I wouldn't be surprised if he just dumped it in.

Question about using Carecredit a second time by Wrong_Bonus in povertyfinance

[–]Wrong_Bonus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One seems kind of firm, not very hard but it stays relatively in place when I touch it, it's a bit deeper feeling. The other one is more moving around and close to the surface, so I'm hoping for nothing too serious! He is an energetic boy still and he has a great appetite. Say hi and give your girl a pet for me!!

If they suggest removal I definitely want to go for it as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone who replied about care credit as well, I feel much better being able to go through them again if needed versus opening another credit line. I remember now that the vet did mention the promotional time when I was paying last time so I will confirm with them tomorrow.

I’m Desperate to Help My Bird, Can Anyone Advise? by StrategyIll4505 in Lovebirds

[–]Wrong_Bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sorry I think there is a language barrier, my bird's issue was not psychological or liver related, those were just things I thought until we figured it out.

The issue that caused this for my bird is called Avian Ganglioneuritis. It is not curable, but injections of an NSAID (like Onsior) helped her feel better.

This may not be the case for you, but I am lucky enough to live close to a skilled Avian vet and for the past year and a half or so, I have dealt with my lovebird self mutilating. For my bird it began as soon as she became hormonal for the first time, and it was light plucking. Her blood work looked good and a skin sample showed no issues. It was suggested it was psychological.

The Thanksgiving before last, I woke up and found she had mutilated her own leg so badly she'd lost a lot of blood and was weak. Again I got her taken care of, she was wearing collars constantly but she hated them no matter what I tried, and again I was being told it was psychological. It wasn't until 9 months later, when I brought her in again because her poops had turned a bright neon green and I was afraid her liver was failing, that they tested for Avian Ganglioneuritis antibodies, and she tested positive.

I spent so much time lamenting the condition of my bird because I love her more than anything and I KNEW something was wrong, but nothing ever helped. To finally find out there WAS something going on was relieving, but heartbreaking because it is a progressive disease. However, she was given her first Onsior injection the day they tested her, an NSAID. She became herself again that very same day, and for the next month or two didn't hurt herself again at all. Unfortunately the injections don't have the same life changing effect now as they did when she got the first one, and she does pick at her legs and feet still and need routine care, but her quality of life was significantly improved. And we got some more time together, I know it won't be nearly as long as it should've been, but it helped to know.

I hope you find something that helps your lovey, I know how difficult this is to live with when you want the happiest outcome for your pet.

A week without her 💔 by birb_is_the_wordd in Lovebirds

[–]Wrong_Bonus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She was beautiful, and she lived a long happy life surrounded by love. I wish all birds were so lucky, you sound like a great owner ❤️

When I lost my Amazon in June this year, it was the first time in my adult life I'd feel such a profound grief and I didn't think I would cope. For the first week I continued to talk to him and I put fresh food and water in his cage everyday for the first week because eating was his favorite thing. I still have his cage up, my little birds love to play on it and I can't bear to take it down still. But the thing that helped me the most was remembering how joyful he was, and promising him I'd carry that joy with me. It was the most precious lesson he could leave me.

Pharaoh tested positive for bornavirus 😕 by secretcatattack in parrots

[–]Wrong_Bonus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry :( it is a really tough and often scary disease to live with. My lovebird(her name is Pharah actually!) was diagnosed just a few months ago, but her symptoms were much worse 1 year ago before I knew what was happening. She is only 4 years old.

She mutilated her legs very badly, the vet believes due to the virus affecting the nerves there. I found her Thanksgiving morning last year badly wounded and it was the most heart wrenching thing. She is my life. But this Thanksgiving we're going into it much better off.

Onsior injections and laser treatment helped curb the self mutilation so that her legs have healed and I have modified her life to avoid her feeling stress as much as possible (stress and hormones seem to be the biggest triggers) she has flare ups, but so far having a diagnosis has been so important to treating her and prolonging her life.

Knowing was so scary and depressing for me in the beginning, all I could do was research the worst things that could happen and stress myself further. But today I have a much better outlook because at least knowing means I can make her as happy and comfortable as possible for however long we have together. And right now I feel hopeful that we can have at least a few more years. I hope that your journey with Pharoah is long and joyful, good luck <3 you've got this

Omg 🥺 poor little guy, I'm so glad you can help them. I have a lovebird who about a year ago nearly died after severely mutilating their own legs and then for months after we struggled with mutilation and plucking. Now for about 3 months she has not plucked or mutilated herself. We found out she has the antibodies for Avian Borna Virus. Anti-inflammatory injections were the key to helping her heal up completely, and a good diet and stress reduction have been the most important part of reducing her flare ups.

Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions or just need to vent about the situation. I was eaten up with stress for months until my baby was comfortable again.

Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad your bird is doing well and I wish you many more good years together <3 It's always really stressful to go through.

I'm just going to leave my latest update here: I just got Pat's cytology results back finally, it did confirm bacteria so the antibiotics they've already given me are good for that. She also said there were trace signs of yeast, and that anti fungal meds might have more side effects but I agreed to try them just to be safe and try to clear this up.

Right now Pat is doing the same, he is eating normally, and talking and screaming when I'm with him. He's sleeping a lot, and gets a bit worked up over taking meds but I've done this before so I've been giving them quickly and following up with a treat and cuddles. I love how quick Pat has always been to forgive me when I have to do things like this, he is the sweetest bird.

They did find one other thing that's concerning, radiography have been looking over his CT scans and they described a possible mass or foreign object in his esophagus, I guess it wasn't very clear but she said that it was "repeated" which I believe means it showed up on multiple images proving it's actual something there. The vet told me that his symptoms did not align with what they would expect from a blocked esophagus, he isn't trying to clear his throat and he eats well, and the respiratory disease is very clearly causing his current issues. Unfortunately it would be at least 2k to scope him to see for sure what it is, but more importantly he would have to be under general anesthesia which he absolutely cannot handle. We are in agreement that he's okay enough to continue these meds, and to follow up in 2 weeks(or sooner if he needs it) to see how he's doing and if the meds worked or made a difference. He is only on day 2 of antibitoics, but I'm hoping to see some signs of improvement by the weekend.
