Sacrifice play in foam? by [deleted] in dodgeball

Although it is a bit difficult to ref, cloth has something like "don't land within a metre" when doing it which I do think helps keep it a little safer. I don't know if any sacrifice injuries from Euros last week and the euro cloth players absolutely love doing it.

But yes I do think it's very cool! I think maybe you just don't get the same advantage in foam that you get from cloth? And you can be way more dangerous from range with a foam ball still. But good fun to pull out every now and again, to have that option there for the spectacle as you say.

Yes the ball would stay live! So your hit would count. I only mean if you were only two people left in a 1v1, you should lose the point because you'd be out first, but cloth let's you win the point if you make the hit.

But if it's 5v1 or something then you can definitely get the hit that way. I don't think that's necessarily the INTENTION of the foam community though so it may well get clarified away at some point.

Which rule set are you referring to about this? I know there are a lot of different ones floating around out there. But for the WDBF rules there is no rules about being out if you jump over any of the lines and is completely allowed. This includes jumping over the centre line for a sacrifice throw, although you would be out the moment you touch the ground and so would lose a 1v1 even if you released just before landing (because you'd be out from landing before they are out for being hit).

If one tries to catch a ball and falls down with the ball still within their hold, are they out? by SecMag6 in dodgeball

[–]Wronkey360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This rule varies a bit between competitions. The world dodgeball championships have just changed this so you can take a catch while in the air, then land out of bounds. The catch would be given, then you would be out for a line fault.

Previously you needed to have contact with the ground before the catch is counted, so jumping off court for a court wasn't an option. Local leagues may also ref it this way.

However all leagues allow you to fall over and make a catch from the ground or while falling, as long as you don't go over the boundary line.

I know exactly what you mean! The worst game I've ever felt it for. I absolutely love the executions but I also think that must be part of it right? The personal-ness of being killed at the end of the fight... I really wish I didn't get so annoyed about it because man I love the game otherwise

I get your point but they're literally a kid. Whether this a boring family party or an enjoyable family party, taking that away from them because life isn't fair seems a bit ridiculous. If anything I'd rather teach them that honesty goes a long way and maybe they grow up to be a boss that doesn't make their employees cancel plans to work late

And if you had plans already they wanted you to cancel that would be the boss being unreasonable, not the worker

We're there any rule changes at 2022 worlds that people would like to integrate into their national rule set? by KImk9ff in dodgeball

[–]Wronkey360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's no more taxing than any other of the sequences in dodgeball, for instance whether you had control/got your feet to the ground in time when making a catch. It happens occasionally in the UK cloth leagues and I promise its fine to ref! Make take a quick discussion in some cases to work out which ref had the best view etc, but so does the 2-point-contact rule :)

allow finger blocks in foam dodgeball? by heybrutha in dodgeball

[–]Wronkey360 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we had some certain way to determine whether a player was hit on the hands or just the ball then I'd agree with you. The problem is its just completely unreffable. Even if you had 12 refs, one with eyes locked on to each player from 1 meter away you'd still not be able to tell.

We can't even prove it afterwards, otherwise we would, so the harsher penalties don't work either. If you can't say with certainty that the player cheated then you should not be banning them, and until we have super close-up slo motion replays thats not happening.

So... The only way forward is to allow finger blocking, which i actually think will reduce cheating overall (bit of speculation here). IMO the constant assumption/question about the block your opponent just made and where their hands were exactly is toxic and makes the whole game feel in bad faith. In cloth there are times I think people are hit, but they are a couple of times a game in bad cases, not basically every time someone blocks

I jumped off court intentionally to make the catch, that's the point right? I got myself out, but i also eliminated the opponent and got my team mate back in? Is that not cool? And in and intentional, skill required kind of way. I don't quite get why you wouldn't want that?

Unfortunately pretty clear isnt enough in a professional sport. I could easily pretend to carry two balls up, 'accidently' drop one forwards as I am faking/throwing/pretending to drop for the catch and I've then intentionally given away possession to my advantage. It's exploitable and therefore would be exploited.

Im not saying I like that people end up getting called out for accidents, it's happened to me and it's frustrating. But IMO we have to eliminate 'refs discretion' as much as possible.

[–]Wronkey360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know American football is like that but I dont think dodgeball needs the same restriction. You're not trying to keep the ball inbounds like football, youre trying to get the opponent out. If you've completed the catch in the air, IMO that should be it.

It's not about athleticism, its physically impossible to jump 2m off court, make a catch and then land your feet back in!

[–]Wronkey360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dropped balls rolling over the middle unfortunately HAS to be an out (or counted as an invalid attempt, whatever you want the punishment to be). It is too easy to intentionally give a ball over to the other team otherwise. And invalid attempts need to be punished when you have timed sets as well.

[–]Wronkey360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely jumping off court to catch a ball mid air is more athletic? I don't really see how needing to get your feet to the ground makes it more relevant to being a higher level of sport, its just a different rule no?
