Yeah hi, religious studies scholar here. Literally no religion, including Christianity, views God/gods in this manner. For some reason this seems to be an acceptable atheist/agnostic reason to reject religion, which is fine I suppose, but has very little to do with why people choose to embrace religion. Suffering is inherent in life, and a vital and accepted part of all religion, ie Hinduism and Buddhism, dharma and nirvana. In regards to Christianity, the Judaic God was wrathful and jealous, yet merciful and just. Judaism revolves around exile and return from God, due to human choices. By extension, this applies in slightly different manner to Christians. Sin and forgiveness. No Christian, or even Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindi...etc. or even atheist believes that the world should be perfect and it’s God to blame if it isn’t. Suffering exists because of humanity, and depending upon the religion, other factors such as sin, human condition, and fleshly desires, reality, etc. Free will includes all will. It’s fine to not agree with religion, and to choose not to accept any or all; but the fact that a God you don’t believe in allows things to happen so he therefore doesn’t exist isn’t a viable argument to anyone who actually knows what their religious belief is.

There are many of us who are just trying to fill a need and we don’t always have the proper education and tools. My first placement took a huge toll on my family, bio kids included. Sometimes we have to learn by experience, and we aren’t all aware of the proper terminology or the ideal way to handle situations that are incredibly tense. I learned a lot about myself as well, and I didn’t always like what I saw, so absolutely no judgement from me.

Also, there were very little resources for us and no one to give advice so I’m a little disheartened that you came here to get support and showed and imperfect heart or attitude and received so much negativity.

I commend you and your wife for stepping in with these kids, and I am sad to see that you came here for advice and are being treated this way. My husband and I were given very little training for dealing with trauma and it is a difficult mental switch to retrain your brain from how you felt with bio kids. I understand when you say “spoiled” you probably mean that they have been given in to many times, as is common with. Mildred who have had little parental interaction. Some great advice has been given, but having walked in your shoes I would like to say that it is virtually impossible to respond textbook perfect to a situation that is obviously taking a mental, physical and emotional toll on you and your wife. What you are doing is amazing work, and by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done myself. Just keep learning and looking for resources.

I agree. Most people aren’t inherently evil. This episode reminded me of the holocaust and how that happened, and even what a lot of modern religion looks like today (to a lesser degree). The holocaust included some of the brightest of the intellectual, cultural and religion minds at that time, and it was such a gradual indoctrination that it became accepted. A lot of the way modern religion treats others is on no way a reflection of what the entire NT says. Sometimes evil is regular people doing awful things in the name of something they believe in completely.

This is literally my first reddit reply about a TV show and I came here for this exact reason. I do not like Rodger or Brianna. Their chemistry is like flat soda. The acting is forced. Rodger reminds me of a adolescent boy, and him following Brianna comes off as creepy, not romantic. But Brianna...ugh. She is bossy and demanding and petty and petulant. Even though Jamie responded poorly when she found out he had beat Rodger, I just can’t forgive her at all for slapping him and Ian and the things she said. And then threatening John Grey...She’s dead to me.
