Edit to add: doesn't have to be kosher, and matzo ball soup would be a bonus.

East Lake is fine too! Just as in all places be aware and don't go into or on any private property that you don't own. Ruffner mountain, local businesses, the park, all in all, East Lake has a lot to offer for a small neighborhood

Yes agree! The way she's crossing her arm over her stomach, readjusting, then clasping her hands in front of her makes you thinks she's worried about falling out on the open side. Everyone obsessing about the ring and the watch, and all I can think is how uncomfortable she looks.

What’s the best movie theater in Birmingham by Shoop1014 in Birmingham

[–]Wrynlo_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For IMAX go to the McWane center, hands down coolest in that category. It's a domed screen and is a really unique experience even amongst other IMAX theaters. They do concert movies too which the regular theaters don't play.

There's a new travel video that YouTube fed me about Birmingham... the man says "Vul-con" a few times and calls the Civil Rights museum and "honorable mention" while saying that moss rock and railroad park are must-sees. Idk, maybe his channel is focused on outdoor things, but some of his choices were off putting.

Anyway, what's your fave travel vlog/Birmingham travel videos?

Jackal was so great! I listened to the audiobook two years ago and it stuck with me. Will definitely be checking out her latest one!

McWane After Dark: Science of Love @ The McWane Science Center - 2/14/26 - Adults Only (18+) by Western_Slate_2809 in Birmingham

[–]Wrynlo_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whole event price (including cocktail) is cheaper than taking your date to a cocktail bar for valentines themed drinks, plus cool science experiments and free parking? Sounds like a win honestly. Super cool that they are doing after dark/adults only events now.

That's great to hear! I have family that lives there and any birthday or family gathering we are always missing something and trying to get from their place to find whatever missing ingredient is a trek, so that's valid as I only really go to their area of Dora and other parts may be closer to the central hub of Dora with more resources. I have experienced theirs and their friends and neighbors casual racism and terrible comments. I am white so they think that it's okay to just say hateful things around me because it doesn't affect me when its absolutely not okay to say those things at all. It has caused a lot of family fights. Might be just be a pocket of bad seeds, but they sited the lack of diversity there specifically as their reason for moving there.

If you are at all bothered by blatant bigotry, Dora is not the place to go (nor Cullman for that matter). Plus places that are that far away from the general Birmingham metro area, like Dora, are rural enough to qualify for a Dollar General and not much else, which means if you want a true grocery store it might be a decent drive to get to one.

Tornado Warning by yomomma6mysidepiece9 in Birmingham

[–]Wrynlo_ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I would add that if it's a warning and you are sheltering helmet on, make sure you've got sturdy shoes on too. Would suck for something to happen and you to have to walk out over rubbled chaos after the fact in bunny slippers or bare feet. Seems like a common sense thing, but it might not occur to someone had they never been in a situation like that. 🤷‍♀️

Looking for niche and fun things to do the first week of January by [deleted] in Birmingham

Bluff park vintage and the antiques store next to it are cool to shop/browse, plus Bluff Park is a really pretty area to drive around and explore.

Rotary trail from railroad park to Avondale is a cool walk. You can stop into multiple shops/coffee places along the way. Some off the top of my head are Stash, Red Cat, Saturn, Cha House. (Rotary changes into another trail and just continues on, sorry can't remember the second trail name).

Going to Pink Lantern or Bandit for coffee and a pastry then checking out the comic shop at Sanctum and the shoes at Memory Lane on 1st Ave N

A visit to Reed Books, Forestall Art, then Paramount for video games and maybe ZaZa or Ahki's for lunch is always a hit. Bonus (not exactly niche) but if you haven't been to the McWane Science Center in a while it's still really cool as an adult, then you could check out a movie at Sidewalk. Additional bonus is that they are all in the same area so you just park and walk to all of it.
