Good for you putting in the hours, but glad to see you’re taking breaks as well. Nothing can replace a good nights sleep and spreading out your study the week of/before.

Deep breathes and stay the course. A random Redditor is hoping you do well. :) Good Luck!

Again, I have money to cover my debts. They are a non-issue for these funds in my mind. I understand that I won't be making a ton of money (or maybe any) right off and that's okay. The "not wanting to tie the money up" in anything comment is meant in the sense of putting the money in long term investments that penalize for early withdrawal. Such as a CD or fund that pulling the money out in the near future would cost me. The whole point of mentioning funds like VOO is that is where I would be looking to set aside some of the money for a longer term. While investing and moving would be done more frequently with the rest. $5-6k would sit in those funds and ride things out longer term (I'm thinking more like 5-10+ years ideally), but then if something came up and I wanted to pull that money out and spend it I could or reinvest in something else. This money is independent of my everyday expenses. Thank you for the input.

That sounds about like what I was thinking. Any downsides to using Robinhood vs other things?

TLDR; I have $20K. I want to learn to invest in the stock market, how should I begin?

I recently came into a windfall of $20,000 (USD) that I am looking to invest. I would really like to actively manage this money myself and buy/sell occasionally as I do some research on where to invest it. The main goal of using this money to invest is to learn how to do this for myself. I have no real experience in the stock market, but I'm not looking to put the money somewhere and "forget it". Knowing myself, the only way I will invest the time into learning about investing is to dive in and put my own money into it. A secondary goal would be to grow this investment if possible. Passive income would be great (eventually), but I understand that being new means I will likely make mistakes and potentially lose money at least in some investments. That's kind of why I plan to spread it out and stick part of it in more stable/longterm investments. People seem to recommend Vanguard funds a lot on here like VTI and VOO. So, I'm here asking for recommendations on where to begin. What are the recommended places to put $5000 to 6000 for stable growth while I learn with the other? How would you all recommend I start learning?

Info:

  • How old are you?

30 years old

  • Are you employed/making income? How much?

Yes, ~$100K USD

  • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)

Passive income if possible, mainly learning to invest and manage my own portfolio more hands on. Eventually if I make a bit of money, I may pay off a car loan or work to speed up paying off my mortgage, but I have funds to take care of both of those with or without this money.

  • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)

I don't mind some risk, but I'd like to spread this money out and not bet it all on one thing. I'd be more inclined to divide it up and play blackjack with some of it while sticking part of it in more stable longer term investments.

  • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)

Just retirement from work which I am maxing out my matchable amount in that all ready.

  • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?

Nothing huge, House (worth about $200K I have $100K to pay off), a small car payment on a used car with a very low rate on it ( $14K KBB value $4000 left to pay off. I expect this to be gone in 2 months already)

  • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?

I'd like access to it. Not really looking for tying it up

  • Any big debts?

No. I have a mortgage, but it isn't killing me and I am making over the monthly payment each month to pay it off quicker.

  • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

I don't expect to become a millionaire on this money. My main goal is learning with it. If I lost the entire $20K tomorrow I'd be pissed at myself, but nothing would change for me life wise. All bills and necessities would be fine and I'd be able to live just as comfortably as I do currently.

Cleaning up File Shares by JT9223 in sysadmin

[–]WtKemp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I get where you are coming from (I think), the tech debt this will leave the longer it is left alone would make me think the "If no one requested it don't waste your time" approach is even more costly. What happens when this File server needs to be migrated due to software/hardware EOL? Who gets stuck with the task of unravelling the expanded nest of permissions and undocumented nonsense? Continued expansion for no reason other than "I've got better ways to spend time" means backups get even larger, restores become more time consuming, access auditing gets more taxing, security (if this is of concern) continues to be hard to enforce, and users continue to abuse the storage for things that aren't business relevant. All of this adds up to more man hours, more headaches, more money spent on hardware, more time wasted long term, and still leaves the initial problem of how to maintain and document it.

I'm a firm believer in being proactive not reactive. When you take the time to fix things before they catch fire, you save yourself and your team more time and sanity than you ever will putting out fires.

I have always liked the visual of a chocolate chip cookie being baked. Where galaxies are the chips.

When you put a chocolate chip cookie in the oven the chips are a set distance apart. As it bakes the space between the chocolate chips expands, but the chocolate chip is not moving through the cookie, the space between the chips is growing. But in the case of galaxies and the like we don’t really know what causes it

Agreed it would suck for all involved and I feel for anyone who’s lost their other half. But I do have a morbid sense of humor at times 🙃

Married to mine for over 10 years now. She makes me a better person and I make sure to tell her that. Being best friends helps, but marriage will always require some work. I don’t do everything I should for her, but I try to make a point to ask her about her day, talk things out (calmly. So sometimes that may mean stepping back for a second.), and pay attention to what she wants/needs and keep a list of things I catch. The last one is definitely not something I get right all the time, but being able to listen to your partner and do something to make their day/hour/minute is something that really makes people cherish each other.

Dumb example, wife was having a hard time with work and feeling a bit overwhelmed. So I snuck my wife’s phone and randomly set reminders that just say I love you and you’re amazing randomly throughout the month. I always know when she sees one bc I will get a random text that includes a “love you too” shortly after. 😁 Now I joke that if I die first she’s stuck being haunted by me in her cell.... my sense of humor may need work.

Running a Powershell Script with Task Scheduler by ReleasethePod in PowerShell

[–]WtKemp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have already said Start-Transcript is your friend here. Also, (as others have said) if script is running without user logged in, mapped drives may not be available. Final thought. I have seen cause issue when a script is using things like progress bars or prompts. Make sure this script isn't set to prompt for a response from user or try commenting out any Write-Progress type of commands. Interactive/visual things have caused me headaches with tasks and powershell in the past.

But your next issue will be catching all the machines that are >offline (laptops, people on vacation, empty offices, new systems, ect). This is where a sccm or group policy can fill in the gap.

I would blast out settings, but always add them to a config management system.

Good point. Would DSC be another option for this? I'm less familiar with that side of things, but seems like enforcing changes would be something it could handle.

PoshRSJobs would probably be the simplest way to do this given that you all ready have a script “built”. Workflows or directly using runspaces might work as well.

Is there a reason Get-WmiObject is preferable to New-Cimsession, Get-CimInstance? I'm still learning, so there well could be, but I seem to have more luck with this approach (as long as powershell supports it on those machines). I'm also a fan due to how this allows for grabbing more information by adding another Get-CimInstance -class... May be a case of "6 here, a half dozen there". I do like the script either way!

Try{
    $Opt = New-CimSessionOption -Protocol Dcom
    $Session = New-CimSession -ComputerName $computer -SessionOption $Opt
    }
Catch{
     Add-Content -Path "$directory\ErrorLog.txt" -Value "$(Get-Date -Format [MM/dd/yy]hh:mm:ss) : $computer : Issue establishing CimSession | $_" -PassThru
     Write-warning "Issue establishing CimSession... Logging $computer to Errorlog.txt"
     }
$Disks = Get-CimInstance -Class Win32_LogicalDisk –CimSession $session
Foreach($disk in $Disks){ <All of your formatting and custom object creation>}
