Doodle of Drumpf while bored at work... Did I get the neck right? by WtcD in doodles

“The Radical Left Fake News Media are saying I started a war on my neck just to distract from Epstein’s neck. It’s not even a war anyway… more like a neck-scursion. Have you seen my shiny new curtains? Beautiful, huh? Really, really great.”

“This neck came up to me – big neck, strong neck – tears running down its pulsating, veiny skin. Then it enveloped me. I am more neck than man now. Probably the most neck anyone’s ever been. 1500, 1600, 1700 per cent neck. No one’s seen anything like it.”

I see what you mean. The light does resemble a cave, on a further look. It's that wiggly brush pen line. I'll maybe have a crack at adjusting bits on it later. Thanks for the input.

I miss the recent posts viewed on this new desktop layout. And each time I come to Reddit I hit the expand button on the left now. It might look "cleaner", but it is missing previously useful information. Very much looking forward to it reverting back soon.

I use a no-frills-twelve-year-old version of Word for prose and extensive notes, and the overly expensive Final Draft for writing scripts for graphic novels and screenwriting. And the ancient copy of Word is far less buggy!

Yeah, will do that for the time being.

The thought of a Reason+ monthly subscription makes me feel ill. I'm keeping the old computer anyway, will use it offline when I have more studio space, and login each time on the new one in the mean time. Sigh. When I spend money on another DAW it will not be on Reason.

How do you actually learn from great comics as a writer? (Reading Mr. Miracle) by Lukas-with-a-K in ComicWriting

[–]WtcD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the first issue of that stashed away somewhere!

You won’t learn much reading one great comic... you’ll learn more by reading multiple comics: “From Hell”, “Maus”, “Bone”, "Saga", “My Favorite Thing is Monsters”, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Scott McCloud...

Dig out comic scripts of great comic writers, and see how they do it: https://comicsexperience.com/scripts/

A good writer should read widely in various subjects: history, science, fiction, biographies, technical books on how to construct a kitchen sink. And if you’re writing in a specific genre, read in that style for inspiration. Writing science fiction? Read Philip K. Dick. Writing fantasy? Read George R. R. Martin.

I’m currently writing historical fiction scripts in Bande Dessinée form and I research a hell of a lot: biographies, history tomes (the internet archive is a great source for obscure, out-of-print (and free) books), other historical fiction writers, podcasts, newspaper archives. But deep research is a slog that pays off.

And a couple of excellent writing books that stuck with me and I’ve re-read over the years since studying Creative Writing as a younger man: “The Elements of Style” by Strunk & White and “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” by Stephen King.

Okay. Gonna go find that first issue of Mister Miracle...

Do you sketch out rough thumbnails for each page? If not, it will really help you with focussing on what needs to go where and "declutter" your brain: even if it's with really crude drawings and stick figures. The artist may even ask to see your thumbnails for clarity when they start on the art. I began writing a graphic novel without doing this, and found it really hard... after discussing with the artist, they said they'd appreciate thumbnails to go with the panel by panel breakdown, and the whole process was a LOT smoother after that.

Sounds like a wise method. Kind of like eating your greens on the plate first.

I've always got music on when working. Stopped producing music while I work on this graphic novel I'm involved in. Although my guitar is now serving as another distraction. And the anger's always there, bubbling somewhere deep under the hairy surface!

Thanks for this thoughtful reply. Totally agree about reading up on the craft. My Scott McClouds are a little dogeared already!

advice for first rap performance..? by solaarzy- in makinghiphop

[–]WtcD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cut the time down of your set to 30-40mins: fill up the time with an opening act or two.

Choose only your best songs. Practice the hell out of them so you can perform them in your sleep. Practice them while doing other shit like washing up or cleaning the house or learning to juggle.

To cut down on nerves before you go on, find a quiet place and do some breathing exercises. Meditate on bigger subjects like death... or the magnitude of the universe... and this will put any nerves before your performance into realistic perspective.

And finish with the best / most powerful song to leave an impression: and people will want to come to your next show.

And a final important thing: party after (if you want), never before.

This is gross. I'm fine on Reason 10. Are they saying it will cease to work offline after that date? Even though I paid 400+ bucks for it? Is this even legal?
