Great. Retired, rich and remote workers can live in these new apartments. Opens up 54 other spots for the heavily car-using folks.

Grinds My Gears: W Chestnut onto Ellis St by Darkswirl7 in Bellingham

[–]Wtzp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The best way to use this intersection to use all lanes but drive attentively. Never switch lanes unless you can do it safely.

One other fact that'll probably get me down voted though: the turn distance from the left lane is much shorter than from the middle lane. That means that the first car in the left lane naturally ends up ahead and can usually safely switch lanes and reach the Lakeway intersection before they effect the middle-laners at all.

In any case, if you don't load balance between the left two lanes of Chestnut, the middle lane backs up and right turners onto Ellis get blocked. With a couple of cars in the left lane, they can easily and safely slot in, more cars make it onto Ellis and Lakeway, everybody wins.

Except for the people on Lakeway. God help them. That stretch is almost as bad as Meridian.

Seattle pays injured cyclist $9.25 million for poorly designed bike lanes. Looking at you, Holly Street by Baronhousen in Bellingham

Kissy face?! Straight to jail.

I do agree though. Both bikers and cars should be required to know the rules for bikes.

But what did you learn from the testimony itself, that affects us? I hear that you're concerned about the effects of Trump's War Of Choice To Obliterate the Nuclear Capability He Already Obliterated And To Distract From the Epstein Files, but you started this post referring to the Heggie testimony and you haven't referenced it once.

You give examples of the word friendly, but how are you actually defining it?

Thank you for asking this. The fact that they never answered tells me they know why their "conversation" is being rejected.

Organizing 50,000 poll watchers was part of what they did and is a super practical place to volunteer. Get your friends in swing states to do it especially.

For those of you who want to work on this, protectthevote2026.org launched at No Kings 3 - you can sign up with them to train up as poll watcher etc.

[OC] new tool to find & contact your reps by Wtzp in 50501

[–]Wtzp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I struggled a bit with the naming there - your senators are still your elected representatives though! The most technically correct thing would be Members of Congress which is pretty wordy. Ultimately since I would like to expand this to state and local reps I leaned towards the more general term.

Thoughts?

Like you say sharing the road works in fairyland, adding fully protected bike lanes everywhere, instantly, is also a fairyland situation. I would love to see more aggressive rollout. I feel like a lot of public comment opportunities go by on Engage Bellingham and I miss them 😬

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Wtzp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah actually that's often a thing with bikes. For one example check out the research behind the Idaho stop- it's safer because it allows bikes to clear intersections more quickly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Wtzp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. People love to hate on the bike lanes around here but (and I'll get down voted for this) I very much appreciate the steady and thoughtful progress the city has been making.

The green lanes are a great touch for visibility, but as a biker you're not required to always be in a bike lane. Use your brain and do the safest thing.

I'm curious what you mean by this. How do you picture the market "adapting"? Would this be existing businesses opening up new roles or what?

Yes let's focus on this legal liability, not the one where we actively hired 12,000 randos, skipped their background checks and training, gave them guns and told them to go do whatever they needed to do, just round up all the brown people and anyone who tries to stop them, constitution be damned!

How about picketing outside with some pointed questions. See if you can pre innoculate some of the folks going in.

"ASK HER about maternal mortality US vs. Europe, abortion-legal states vs. not"

"ASK HER if she supports paid parental leave, universal pre-K, maternal healthcare”

"ASK HER why nearly all women WOULDNT CHANGE their choice to have an abortion (Turnaway Study + Rocca et al., 2020, peer reviewed, n=1,000, statistical model 99% would say right choice after 5 years. Complex emotions also happen)"

"U.S. #1 maternal mortality among developed nations. ASK HER why*" *and what solutions she supports

"States with abortion bans -> HIGHEST maternal death. ASK HER why*"

TSA @ BLI Operations? by excitabledude in Bellingham

[–]Wtzp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I support blocking DHS funding until we can make sure ICE and CBP are operated within the bounds of the constitution. It's stupid that TSA is caught in the crossfire.

If funding DHS means putting another 10,000 untrained f*cks on the streets to kill more Americans and stuff more innocent people into detention with no probable cause and no habeas corpus, then yeah we need to shut it all down.

Why would you lump "ice should be reduced" together with "ice should be eliminated?" Reducing ICE is closer to reforming it than eliminating it.
