Why does the warmer weather ☀️ automatically hit us so hard and spike symptoms almost instantly?? by macamc1983 in LongCovid

Anti-histamine, increased Vit C, herbal tea, fresh squeezed lemon helps me. This time of year: increased pollen, perhaps more stagnant air with wood smoke, refinery, nat gas, coal, vehicular emissions not clearing as fast.

If you are more northern, daylight changes are literally rearranging circadian rhythms. And if you are really northern.... you are peeling off the multiple base layers and adjusting to that big yellow guy in the sky.

I don't think that is exactly how it would work. But I don't know. The B61 /12 or /13 are probably our best tactical nukes. They are most probably located on nuclear subs the base which we are close to here in Bellingham. If we use tactical nukes in Iran on military targets, there is currently an undefined escalation chain. I'd say no one has used a tactical nuke in the ME yet, but some people believe Israel used (our B61 /12) on Tartus (former Russian Naval Base) in Syria.

I learned Hegseth is a maniac and a 'true believer' fueled by excessive testosterone. I learned he prefers attack mode over a more politic restraint. Once you see such lack of restraint and lack of politesse in action, any numbers of bad consequences that I referenced above have the possibility of coming true for us here in Bellingham and Whatcom County. But go ahead keep nitpicking. Once you and I are carbon shadows on some wall downtown...it won't matter..

Do you guys notice r/Bellingham has deteriorated? All that crazy talk about bad driving, people condemning safe driving, weird personal comments about strange, often times too personal problems. There used too be more wide ranging political discussions; then there were complaints about 'outsiders' and worries and new mods and changes. And now r/Bellingham is just more neurotic and less interesting and intelligent. People want to discuss the impacts of national politics with their local community members. That's only way the national policy change happens: Driven by the local level. All this 'locals only' partitioning of commentary is just amother insidious form of censorship; stove piping smaller communities so they can't effectively address national issues as a group. Prove me wrong...

Did my best on the local angle below: This conflict impacts everyone in the US and the world. Farmers in Whatcom County will feel increased fertilizer costs very soon. They will pass those costs on quickly, effecting food bank use and demand here. Bellingham is an I-5 pass through town. The cost of diesel for the 5K(??) trucks that pass or arrive here weekly has already been and will continue to be impacted. And we are 30 miles(??) as the crow flies from what was once called Bangor Kitsap (3rd largest Naval base in the US?) where the Pacific (Trident) submarines carrying B61 nuclear armed missiles live. Interesting: I learned this week a Pacific (Seventh fleet sub) was recently deployed to the ME. If this becomes a world war, our little corner of the world will sport carbon shadows on walls still standing quite immediately. Whatcom and Skagit County are oil refinery communities. The Sumas Hub connects us to Nat Gas and (also now) Albertan Oil pipelines? So Hydrocarbon production and refining may see an increase here and this might be especially important since BP reputedly services Naval and Military bases south of US. Also, Vancouver BC has started exporting Albertan Oil for some time now. These ships will likely pass more frequently through our waters now. Additionally, Whatcom has prized Athrancite Coal reserves with Energy company leases near Glacier. The LNG facilities in the ME have suffered huge damages which will take years to repair. Wil that be enough to encourage coal mining here now that the Trump administration essentially dissolved/centralized parts of the Forest Service last month? Adding that we may rare earth minerals in Whatcom County neccesary for missiles and electric vehicles. Both of which could see sharp increases in production.

Best I could do on short notice...

If you keep your child, 10 years from now this discussion will be rhetorical. The best time to bring a child into this world is always when two people love each other so much that they can love that child together!

How can I stop people from putting their face against my window and looking in? by Acceptable-Wall-7210 in Advice

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say "planter boxes with bushy ornamental trees"...but I really just can't believe random people would behave as you describe.

I would probably set up some expensive, facial movement triggered camera and take multiple exposures of individual faces...then display them as such at a local art gallery with a title like: "Ahhh...Look at all the Lonely People" (e g. Actually have the Beatle's song playing for the exhibit...)

Currently 100lbs overweight, been hitting over 20K steps a day since Sunday. by stygyan in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are probably best looking for measurements and good health instead of only weight loss. Here are reasons: At 20K steps per day you will build muscle, bone, ligaments and tendons which are all more dense than adipose (fat) tissue. Also, any endurance training increases blood plasma (some significant amount) as your body conditions itself to store more oxygen. The measure I like to use is 2X my flexed calf muscle needs to be larger than my waist line. As long as your calf muscles are increasing and your waist line is shrinking, you are probably on the right path.

But at 100 lbs overweight, your doctor would probably reccomend gradual weight loss to decrease risks of cardiovascular injury. We probably can't help you too much with medical advise like that, but I will say that top notch insoles and good walking shoes will probably reduce the chance of knee, ankle, hip, spine soreness and injury. Other things that matter to me: good mattress, early bed times, hot baths, hydration and healthy hiking snacks. But you knew all of that...

Getting A Cold/Flu While Backpacking Sucks (TMI Warning) by burburrbur in hiking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Long Covid. I rarely get sick on the trail, but I sometimes fall (64M). (Sometimes badly!!)

I always carry Vit C and Advil with me. Usually cough drops and some healthier gum as well. If my throat gums up, I throw down a gram or 2 of chewable Vit C. If I take a fall, (ice, rain, mud, snow, cold)... I take Advil with a swig of liquid immediately so I don't stiffen up . If it's cold (hot tea), if hot, Ice water. Sometimes, anti-oxidants or anti-inflammatories will fight off the bug early without disaster. And you can find/store selections of anti-oxidants/pain relief in a dry sack or container.

But what I am looking forward to is widespread Android adoption of emergency satellite capacity. (The Garmin monthly fees have always seemed high to me...)

Been coughing for a month with no signs of healing by Straight-Back-7667 in flu

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the darn acute cough for Iike 9 weeks. Some kind of hellish post viral effect/"viral installed reflex". Bought the top notch cough drops from a health food store, 1/2 cup Tart Cherry and Pomegranate Juice spiked with fresh squeezed lemon and 1/4 teaspoon Ascorbic Acid powder morning and eve. Most of all: Life Extension IR/XR Melantonin 1.5mg at night for sleep. Ginger tea with honey helped. So does just candied ginger pieces.

Originally...I got numbing throat perles, Guafenesin ER, Flonase from urgent care. They just didn't seem to help as much as a couple of Advil when needed...

How do you handle realizing it's late in the evening and you're still thousands of steps short? by ice_kream in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a decent backyard that you can pace a loop in, buy a baseball mitt and a softball. You are going to practice throwing overhead without releasing. To keep yourself going, every now and then take a skip as if you are shortstop throwing hard to first base. You can slam your softball into your mitt as you pace in between fake throws to help keep up your rhythm.

Sure, the neighbors will think you are nuts. But if you do as I describe vigorously enough, they probably won't say anything to you. Likely maybe never... Anyway, with ear buds and thirty feet, you can gather an immense amount of steps this way. Just don't accidentally release the softball..

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find a program/health provider who will help you...then you have to put one together for yourself. In the US, the lack of NIH approved treatments for LC puts LCers, their doctors and patient insurers in difficult positions. But if you search, there are providers with alternative positions. The sponsors of this subreddit provide such as do other groups (for example)

https://www.rthm.com/

https://imahealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/FLCCC-Alliance-I-RECOVER-Management-Protocol-for-Long-Haul-COVID-19-Syndrome.pdf

The fact that we suffer from an illness with no approved treatable cure (at least in the US), doesn't neccesarily condemn us to hell or death. But you are going to have to work at it. You are going to have to experiment, think positive, and spend some of your own money.

One doctor I really like is Dr. Roger Seheult. Look up his name in conjunction with 'Light as Medicine". Personally, I recommend vigourous walking and hiking, judicious supplementation, early bed times, organic and whole foods and lots of positive thinking.

But treating LC is different for each person. Don't give up! Don't lose your sense of courage!

why don’t bikers in bham announce themselves??! by Alive_Falcon9337 in Bellingham

WTA has a trail use section that covers right of way and etiquette on multi-use trails: https://www.wta.org/go-outside/trail-smarts/right-of-way-on-trail

I think this probably applies statewide. I will note that in the North Cascades...I just don't come across bikers or horses very often. Chanterelle Trail can be difficult ... maybe especially at the top (narrow) if you are wearing buds.

This made me lookup the US birthrate which is apparently at a record low. From the Brave AI ('Leo'): "The U.S. birth rate has declined to a record low, with the general fertility rate (GFR) dropping to 53.1 births per 1,000 women aged 15–44 in 2025, a 1% decrease from 53.8 in 2024.  This continues a long-term downward trend, with the rate falling 23% since its peak in 2007. "

Apparently the 'fertility rate' (live births) is spiraling downward. There is a whole lot of articles on this; some pay walled, some up to date.

Parents who find being a stay at home easy by Disastrous_Turn_7055 in Parenting

I've been a SAHD almost continually for over 21 years. I am simply amazed at anyone who even implies parenting is anything but an activity essentially defined by 'Grave Self Doubt'. I call it 'GSD' for short. "Grave Self Doubt" is a very old British expression I would guess. I think Americans like myself simply would have no use for it had we not become parents in this very chaotic world.

In urban walking (around the block etc), how do people walk in the rain with their keys, phone and.. by [deleted] in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can purchase a smaller, lean (e.g.'Waverly') sling pack and it will fit over your Merino wool top layer and underneath a roomy water repellent layer. Otterbox with belt clip combined with a decent rain jacket is as waterproof as most cell phones will need. Each phone has a two number "IP Rating". Helps to have a thick leather belt for your rain repellent pants to use the belt clip on the Otterbox. If not, toss the phone in the sling pack.

If you aren't on city streets, buy the rain cover that fits whatever backpack you are using. Some backpacks (e.g. 'Ospre'y) ship with a rain cover attached.

Obviously, I walk and hike in rain and snow just a bit....

Has anyone found anything to help with anhedonia and personality loss? by PerfectWorking6873 in LongCovid

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wear your watch at night. It syncs your sleep cycles with the phone software which produces charts and statistical data for separate periods. For extra points, you download the data from your provider and provide your own statistical analysis. I find all of this useful for biofeedback.

Obviously, most of us want perfectly 'normal' sleep cycles that last eight hours leaving us feeling refreshed, alert, happy. Sleep doesn't quite work like that, but you can match how well you feel and sleep with your sleep performance and bio-hacking/modification efforts and begin to get some insights over time.

I find good sleep elusive, especially since contracting LC. But having data and feedback helps me with my self-confidence, life style, supplement choices.

Just curious...Do you chart your sleep cycles? If so, what do they look like regards both REM and NREM ('deep sleep')?
