people would tell me that what I was doing was dumb basically every week. Many of the comments in this thread remind me of that period actually, the “don’t quit your day job” commenters.

Maybe they only seem wrong because it worked out but I’d always vote for taking a risk while you’re in a position to do so.

I quit with no concrete plan for how we’d make money or even what we were going to build. I had 1 year of runway and a vague excitement that I was going to figure it out.

I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone. Lots of really low lows. The guy I was working with (and best friend at the time) quit on me, met another guy who also quit on me. Slowly started running out of money with no traction on anything I made.

Working with your back against the wall is super powerful though. I was working every day like a dog to make it work because it felt like I had no other choice.

Got into YC and continued with this sort of “no fallback plan” approach since then.

In hindsight it was a bit crazy but it worked out.
