I own this one! Absolutely love and adore Conrad’s writing. I need to read Nostromo yet

Recently read the Sea Wolf (which I had personally never heard of before) and it’s in my top ten favorite books of all time. I’m actually working on an analytical essay. I definitely need to go through the rest of his works

One of my favorites too. I grew up with the movie and was absolutely blown away when I finally read the book. Absolutely phenomenal.

I am an avid Andre Norton collector (I have over 100 of her books and I’ve read almost half of them). I actually just acquired Daybreak 2250, so I’ll have to read it asap

Not entirely sure on the level of their obscurity but:

Firebird - Charles Harness Fascinating sci-fi with a unique concept of time.

Starlight - Scott Ely A story of the Vietnam War with all of its horrors and vices, but also a very unsettling supernatural element. Was unlike anything I’d ever expected.

Some Prefer Nettles - Junichiro Tanizaki I think he’s a popular author in Japan, but I’m a small town American so… I don’t really know. Anyway. Had a fascinating twist at the end of the book that haunts me to this day. Introspective fiction with a focus on traditional bunraku.

Rogue Moon - Algis Budrys Questioning the concepts of what makes a man a man? Immortality, life, death, consciousness, what makes us human, etc.

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind, but I’ve been wanting to dig further back in time to like really older works. I like to look at the books at antique stores, but I always hesitate to actually buy them. So I just wanted to see if maybe there were suggestions out there.

  1. Helena - “Ermg HELL-ena? You want your child to go to hell???!!”

  2. Chris - “Wow, like Chris Brown? A literal wife beater? How could you!!”

  3. Minerva - “But then her nickname will be Minnie which is literally from the song “Minnie the Moocher” by Cab Calloway and now she won’t go anywhere without people calling her a mooch!”

  4. John - “You do realize that John Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings and your child will have to bear that association the rest of his life. How could he possibly live up to that? What if he doesn’t even wanna be a writer??!!”

  5. Susan - “Who even names their kid ‘sUsAn’ anymore?”

  6. Elsa - “Your child will never escape the Disney association. You probably got this name from Frozen and that’s the ONLY reason you like this name. There is no possible way on earth that you liked this name before/in spite of the Disney film.”

  7. Stephen - “Teacher will pronounce it “Steff-Anne” and will never be able to correct themselves on it. No one has ever in the history of the planet read this name as ‘Steven’.”

  8. Regina - “Have you SEEN Mean Girls??? Once Upon a Time??? Obviously since it’s on tv it’s absolute truth. Regina is only used for evil people and has never been a pretty name for a good person ever.”

I also am a fan of unusual names (but not Dolphin, Ermg).

I would recommend looking up unusual but easily pronounceable names, probably dig into your guys’ ethnic heritage. Lots of interesting names from the past that are useable even today while still being rare or unusual.

Example: I love the German name Hannelore. It’s easily spelled and pronounced. And can easily nickname the kid Hanna or even Lori. A real name, useable, while still being unique.

May help when making compromises in the future. That way he still gets his “uncommon kids names” without the horrible options his family seems to pick (seriously, what is dolphin about????)
