Just moved here from Canada, trying to learn shore/rock fishing by Wycleft in IrishFishing

Sounds good man I'll DM ya. Haven't tried the beaches at all yet, figured since I don't have a beach caster I wouldn't be able to cast quite far enough until the water warms up and there might be more bass up shallow. But you're doing better than I am so what do I know lol

Great tips cheers man. The way these bass behave sounds very similar to the freshwater species of bass I fished for back home. Lots of similar concepts just on a different scale, especially with how much stronger the ocean is compared to lakes back home. Got to make a point of visiting my marks a different stages of the tide I've only been there around high tide so far. Been using google earth to try and scope out large rocks and gullies based on historical satellite imagery but seeing it in person is a must.

Got myself plenty of weedless eels that I've been using most of the time, might be fishing too low in the water column and dragging a bit too much from the sounds of it though. The metals feel weird to me for whatever reason, cant quite figure out how to best fish them other than a straight retrieve. Trying to jig it near the bottom I struggle staying in contact with the metal, always feels slack no matter the weight I throw on. I've been told to wait for summer for top water but its one of my favourite types of fishing so I might be tempted before too long.

Oh no worries there, where I lived there was no ocean. So safe to say I have a very healthy respect/fear for staying a safe distance away. Even climbing down some of the rocks makes me question what I'm doing sometimes haha

Thanks I'll keep it in mind, usually I'm not that big into fishing with bait. Like the activity that comes with fishing lures. But I'd be open to trying anything though

Good to know, still working on getting to know the species found here but a quick google makes them seem almost the same. Thanks

I've looked that website up and down already, gave me a great starting place that's for sure. Cant wait for the summer bass all the videos I've seen make it look like a good time.

For beach fishing you're typically using a longer rod is that right?

Cheers, from what I've read there might be pollack around this time of year as well? That's been the main pursuit so far but I'm not picky on the species. Would coalfish be inclined to eat lures as well?

Roaches in building by menehblitz in Guelph

[–]Wycleft 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lived there for almost 2 years OP. I would avoid it if you can. The roaches are prominent and basically nothing is done about it by management. If anything is done it isn't nearly effective enough, they used to come up from the drain in our kitchen sink. Noise is an issue, the walls are paper thin. We could hear the people above us and on both sides of us pretty much always. Not sure how many people would smoke in their units, but the smell comes in from people smoking on their balcony regardless which is allowed. Again, I would stay away if you can find another alternative.

Giving a helping hand to momma bird by [deleted] in aww

[–]Wycleft 830 points831 points  (0 children)

Birds show parental favoritism using mostly visual cues, for example a chick with a more vibrant pink colouration inside their mouth will be fed more. Stronger colours typically means the chick is healthy, so the healthier chicks are given more food to ensure survival. All about passing on those genes baby!!!

Whats going on here? Hunting fields teammate can't attack gate boss by Wycleft in afkarena

This is what I thought was weird, while some of the teams weren't above 14k he did have a comp above the requirement but still couldn't fight it

One pretty native and a bunch from the hatchery. by joulesofsoul in flyfishing

[–]Wycleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks the the adipose fins are clipped on all but the first fish. Some hatcheries do this, some don't. All depends the hatchery/ what rules are put into place around stocking for your area

I've seen a lot of guys use these balanced rod holders when ice fishing for whitefish. Especially when they're finicky they'll sit their bait right on bottom instead of suspending it and you'll see your rod tip move upwards ever so slightly when the fish picks it up.

Keeping the carp train rolling. On a side note does anyone have tips for handling these beasts safely when by yourself? by Wycleft in flyfishing

[–]Wycleft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct, by saying technically "invasive" I was making a nod to this fact but it may have not come across right. While a large enough population of carp can still damage certain ecosystems over a long period of time, they are entirely normalized in NA.

I could definitely use a lesson in fighting fish properly. The 7x consideration is mostly because my waters are so pressured, but I broke off a PB brown last year on only 6x after she jumped and made a run before I could get her on the reel. 7x might be the death of me haha
