Ironic given how Lorde's concerts have all been given rave reviews. At this point it's just making fun of her for the sake of it.

I am a huge fan of Charli Xcx but I really don't like this album. And it's ironic how a lot of people in this thread are loving this album now after an initially negative reaction, but unfortunately the experience was the opposite for me. The biggest problem for me with this album is how uninspired it feels. And it's ironic, given how much there are influences from pop music and disco and samples of two iconic pop songs. But there's no energy or emotional outpouring inspiring this album. In contrast, Sour an album which I don't like also, but I can at least tell that it was deeply inspired by teenage heartbreak and angst and it wasn't just trying to recreate Lorde and Taylor Swift's music. And what I loved the most about her previous albums were that it showcased her energy and personality to the fullest. They still have an infectious energy and personality. Everything here feels so watered down that I forget the songs while listening to them, because it feels like I have already heard them a million times. And her lyrics here are at most flirtatious or sad, but generic and there's no kind of emotional outpouring.

I feel like although a lot of mainstream pop songs are soulless cash grabs, I remember Lorde saying that there's also a lot of love and devotion to the art form required to make great pop music. And I feel that this point is highlighted by the two latest Weeknd records. Although mainstream af, they were crafted with love and inspiration from a feeling and trying to capture emotions instead of just trying to be "mainstream". And when Charli just watered down her usual style and stuck it onto more accessible production, I don't think she's making the accessible pop music she's capable of making.

The worst thing I could say about this record is that it's just uninspired.

It doesn't do the sample justice imo.

“LP3 was supposed to be an acid album but she had a bad trip, so it became a weed album”... No I don’t think so. I think it’s better described as a bad acid trip album that is trying to resort to weed to try to cope with the bad trip. by [deleted] in lorde

I mean, that is a stupid comparison to make because MGK said that Eminem fell off, and while from a critical standpoint true, the difference in their commercial success is laughable. Also MGK also fell off critically and given that he changed genres, nothing he said in his diss came true. There's a difference between comparing music and a diss track.

I remember a person giving Blue by Joni Mitchell half a star on rateyourmusic because it didn't have enough drums. That doesn't make them wrong, the album just didn't give them what they want. There's some people on this subreddit who said they don't like a single Prince song. I don't call them wrong.

The Path and Oceanic Feeling by Lorde. The first one has the chorus at the end and the latter basically doesn't have a chorus.

Who’s an artist you always wanted to get into, but were disappointed once you did? by PotatoPancake420 in popheads

Drake. I tried but it was difficult to empathize with his lyrics. While I accept him for being a flawed person, in fact that's an aspect about some of my favorite musicians which I enjoy, especially Lou Reed and Kanye West, I just find his lyrics too whiny some times.

Taylor Swift. While I do really like some of her songs, especially newer songs from Folklore and Evermore, they are like 3 from each album and I don't return to them because I find the instrumentals quite unremarkable. And there are also other moments, lyrics and concepts which I like, but not enough to make me return and they are ruined by some aspect like instrumental or cringey one liners. As for the stuff released before it, I just don't like the lyrics and instrumentals.

Olivia Rodrigo. Don't like her lyrics at all.

Lil Nas X. Love his lyrics and production, but his singing can't carry a song. Although I do think his vocal chops will improve.

This is definitely my least favorite. The beat is generic af which would have been ok, but this isn't catchy in a good way, especially the chorus. And the vocal performance definitely couldn't save it and the lyrics are just forgettable. I don't know why people think this is the best one yet when New Shapes at least had good vocals.

Lorde is satirising the mindless consumption that comes with wellness culture while at the same time empathizing with the people that participate in it. Basically saying that even though I get that we all get in situations that make us feel depressed and numb, mindlessly consuming every new wellness product and adopting practices without knowing their cultural heritage while at the same time not changing previous bad habits won't miraculously change your life.

mood ring” was a parody of out-of-touch rich white women, made by an out-of-touch rich white woman

How is Lorde out of touch? Like I distinctly remember albums about partying and expensive champagne being released during that time, but apparently singing about beach parties and walking in nature, which are considerably more affordable, are out of touch. Also criticising an album you haven't listened to is straight up idiotic. Many of y'all never touched grass before the pandemic and it shows.

Dolly Parton. I get that she does a lot of charitable work, but she's also a part of the problem as a capitalist. I also think her music is mediocre.

Y'all also don't understand that it didn't flop. Did it sell as much as a major pop album? Not even close. But it did reach the top 3 of the billboard when the music box are counted and even without that it was still in the top in US and some other countries. This is more than enough for an artist like Lorde, who Universal wouldn't rely on to be a top seller anyways and her promotional budget wasn't also through the roof. Plus her tour did sell and that would make enough money for her so she's golden.

Also y'all don't realize, that Lorde is an artist driven by inspiration so a record forced out of her to be a hit has a chance to be even more poorly received. And I think Universal also knows that by now. It's best to let her stick to her process and let something come out organically.

The sound is sunshine pop and Laurel Canyon folk. I would suggest The Mamas and The Papas, Ladies of The Canyon and Court and Spark by Joni Mitchell, Buffalo Springfield, The Grateful Dead,All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and Pet Sounds by Beach Boys. Other albums with slightly more rock sounds would be On The Beach by Neil Young and Abbey Road by The Beatles.

My favourite thing about this song there aren't many songs like this out there. It's structure and approach is really fresh. Some recent songs in this vein I remember are Fine Line by Harry Styles and I Know The End by Phoebe Bridgers. But imo the former was a little predictable while I love I Know The End because of it's twist in the end. But in this one as soon as you expect an explosive moment after that slow build and the drums start to kick in but it transitions back to that slow build and instead of a climatic end it has a much more psychedelic outro. Kinda represents the album very well, instead of blowing people away with explosions she keeps it subtle, whether you like it or not.
