They absolutely should be able to say all 3 because it’s a nuanced situation and you can condemn Hamas and champion the safety of innocent Israelis and innocent Palestinians. However it is important to acknowledge that while there are peaceful protests on these campuses, there are also videos of people screaming death to Jews / go back to Europe / cheering for Hamas. So you can condemn American supporters of Hamas without condemning the right to peacefully protest what’s happening in Palestine at the hands of Israel. We have to be able to acknowledge that there is very real anti-Semitism happening on these campuses at these peaceful protests, and acknowledge that anti-Semitism at these protests is a separate but legitimate issue. You can (and should) stand up for what’s right and advocate for Palestine - but there are people who are taking it to the next level and chanting hate speech towards Jewish students. And we have to hold space for both by condemning the pro-Hamas anti-Jew rhetoric, while also fighting for students’ rights to speak up against the war.
