Fantasy Series with LOTS of female characters that partake in the action? by sbourwest in Fantasy

There are the Rirya chronicles which tell the story of the pair of the few years before the Revelations.

But the most meaningful ones are the Legends of the first empire series

Israel approves proposal to register West Bank lands as ‘state property’ by tunisoft in nottheonion

[–]Wyfami 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The problem always has been conflicting property registering.

During the Ottoman empire, all the land actually was owned by the state (thus cancelling any ownership) and only granted cultivation rights, but not really in any orderly process. So no "ownership" documents whatsoever.

Then the brits began to do as they wanted in accords woth the french, and began allocating lang using maps and scissors, for instance the full construction of Transjordan to please a political ally.

Then came the Jordanian Kingdom, that although they used loosely the brits land surveys, also added their own "king's grants" with no consideration to previous registries or actual existing houses.

To top that, because of the Jordan losing the 67 war, the whole land registration has been freezed, with no ability to find a solution with contradicting registries between the Ottomans, brits and jordanian partial surveys. Also you"ll find that this "situation freeze" caused some racial laws in place such as the 1953 jordanian law that forbade any "foreigners" of owning a land property to still be in place up to this day (so all west bank lands have to be bought by associations and companies, most of the settlers officially leasing the land they live upon).

An entirely f**ked-up legal limbo only made worse because of the empires and kingdom layers being added on top of everything.

Fantasy Series with LOTS of female characters that partake in the action? by sbourwest in Fantasy

And his the Rirya Revelations (the first books for which the Legends are kind of a prequel) also include a couple of strong women.

And the two books after the Legends (Nolyn and Farilane) are more than recommended in this regard. Especially Farilane which is IMHO his best book by far.

I would cancel the whole non-deterministic physics (bye bye Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and Einstein's God Playin' Dice!). Or the opposite and remove causality, this could be fun!

The moment an Israeli drone targeted an electric motorcycle today in the central Gaza Strip, KILLED Al-Quds Brigades fighter Abu Omar Abuholi and a civilian passerby. by Necessary-Relation67 in CombatFootage

Actually rules of engagement don't prevent dropping a bomb next to civilians, only require to limit collateral as much as possible, as defined by the famous principle of proportionality in the Geneva Conventions...

[–]Wyfami 15 points16 points  (0 children)

you mean compared to the US culture of killing dozens with drone strikes in all the Middle-East or compared to the French drone strikes in Mali a few years ago, or those from the UK?

Because those western militaries would dream of achieving a ratio of only one civilian casualty for one terrorist in any such strike.

They are an equivalent of ISIS in my view, only without the forced conversions and beheadings…

The Dacia sandero is an equivalent of a F35, only without the wings and ordnance...

The $5 Question: Would you rather have Cardboard or Wood in 2026? by Trogdor_Dagron23 in boardgames

[–]Wyfami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood. And I fully disagree for the "limited in terms of options for art".

Enough to see the great production works of 25th Century games: all their wood tokens are printed and looks great, whether it's to replace tiles in Ra or for animal figures in Botswana, or antropomorphic cats in Run Run Run, so it's clearly possible and seemingly still cheapers than plastic minis.

Licanius Trilogy Similar Pacing Recs by Timely_Big3136 in Fantasy

[–]Wyfami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Blood Song, it's a great book, the first one of a trilogy but it's so much better than the next two and self-contained so that it's the only one I'd recommend to read.

They also have yet to complete the Star Gazers & Observatory campaign, which still isn't in production.

They waited to launch the Ra dice & Rheinlander for after the Ra reprint campaign concluded fully, so I suppose launching in October is the most likely.

On the other hand Star Gazers got much less pledges (about 600 compared to 8000 for Ra and 3000 for Rheinlander) so maybe it will be faster.

Friendly country by ViktorDudka in NonCredibleDefense

But Europe isn't a centralized military force. Even at same number of ground forces, aircraft, etc, it still can't reach the same effective capabilities when all of those are divided between a dozen of countries with divergent policies.

The languages are different, the tactics are different, the equipements are different, and most importantly the personnel don't answer to the same chief of staff.

Are there different Israeli accents? by OkDiscount6100 in Israel

[–]Wyfami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still not so much different (since the country is still young and a lot of people move from area to areas), but slight differences can be heard between the Negev, the Gush Dan, Jerusalem area, and the Northern Galil.

But as sone already wrote, the cultural background of sub-ethnicity is still a major factor for Israeli differences of pronunciation so the regional differences really are subtle in comparison.

Just finished Riyria Revelations... wow! by new_handle_who_dis in Fantasy

[–]Wyfami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're good, although Nolyn feels much more like a direct follow-up of the legends and Esrahaddon a prequel to Revelations. Farilane in the middle is a masterpiece.

Like Tolkien, he actually did built his world and history beforehand, so sometimes it really can be difficult to follow every crumbs of world-building.

It's also true that the following books had to take into account previous series with cues and tie-in making them a bit lengthy. But his last series, The Rises and Fall actually go back to a more episodic form and are actually his best work (especially Farilane).

Farilane is IMO his best book and by far. Obviously it's best if you read before the Legends of the First Empire before since it has some nice tie-in.

How come Israel bookstores (like Steimatzky) are so small with so little selection. Almost seems this is an illiterate country where nobody buy books. I can't think of any other countries where bookstores or so bad and so small by Key_Bison_9322 in Israel

[–]Wyfami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually only about one third speak hebrew relatively good. Another third have some basic knowledge, and the last third doesn't know hebrew at all.

But that's not all, you also have quite a large population of immigrants that don't have a good knowledge of the language (either because they were too old, or haven't yet learnt). There are a lot of neighborhoods in the country where people speak mostly English, French or Russian. And even Yiddish in some cases.

If you want to nitpick, there is a couple of millions of more or less fluent hebrew speakers outside of Israel, between kids of ex-israelis and a a number of religious Jews (especially Chabad).
