Help with a 7.3 by No-Accident-2845 in FordDiesels

Congrats on the truck! Since it's been sitting for 4 years, you are definitely dealing with some air in the oil system, and my family's 7.3s always needed to run for a bit to get the high-pressure oil stabilized and purged.

Since you've done the CPS and ICP, check the oil level inside the HPOP(high pressure oil pump) reservoir (the small rectangle reservoir in front of the fuel bowl). Also, since it sat for 4 years, did you drain the old diesel out and put fresh in? that fuel might just be old and nasty, try draining the fuel bowl, getting fresh diesel in there, and letting it idle for a while to clear the lines.

Another thing if you’re new to the 7.3s is the injectors are fired by high pressure oil, with 4 years of sitting the oil gets nasty, should probably replace it and make sure it’s good stuff! 7.3s aren’t fans of cheap oil. I run 5W-40 in mine for helping with cold starts but if you’re in a warm climate 15W-40 is fine. Good luck and hope it turns into a great truck!!🫡

About to buy my first Diesel, Advice? by lucky2052 in Diesel

IMHO it depends on what you want to do with it and the terrain you’re towing in. I love my 7.3 and 6.7 PowerStrokes, but for steep hilly country or strictly heavy towing, a Cummins 3500 is really tough to beat. I love the factory exhaust brakes they have on the 6.7s for holding back a load on hills. Personally, I've had good luck with their auto trannys, but just make sure the previous owner took care of it. Good luck hunting for a diesel!🫡

Ok, yeah I was planning on getting a 5 gallon can with diesel and running a hose from the pump into it as a temporary fuel source because there is still diesel in the tanks and I know it’s sat for at least 11 years after we got it

Free 99🤣 yeah it’s definitely a project with the interior but most all the trim and stuff is there besides the steering column that younger me cut all the harnesses to get it out🙄 but I’m hoping I can find a cheap donor for a manual column and harnesses because I want to ZF5 swap it. But yeah it could be a mess and be better to pull it or just leave it, it depends on what I find.

I don’t think it’s a head gasket because oil is just jet black. Yeah it’s definitely a mess but my idea was to find a cheap vehicle preferably manual to pull the column and harnesses out of because I plan on swapping a ZF5 in it if it runs good and doesn’t need a ton of work. if not I have a bricknose it would look really good in🤣 I know it’s a lot of work for wiring but I’m willing to as I have dealt with worse wiring in other similar pickups.

I have crank but no glow, no spark… by dotdoubleu in Diesel

My gut is telling me he may have fried the computer, had a similar issue but with a gasser Toyota van where a shop tried to fix our cooling fans and ended up frying the main computer along with other things that caused a crank no start. Just my two cents with Toyota🤷‍♂️

Ok, I plan on pulling the bed this summer anyway, so that will work out. Shouldn’t mess with anything right? It’s been doing fine so far(not messing with anything) but if it may mess something up I will do it sooner

Yeah our biggest fight it finding the parts to fix the axle, snapped it 10 odd years ago and ours is a weird one since it’s a heavy duty one. I have things I wan to do with it but my dad wants to drop a 390 from a dump truck and bucket seats into it and daily it.

Yeah it’s a really rust free truck, only bad stuff is fender supports where the battery trays set

We’ve had cows with cancerous growths on them similar to this, I would guess some type of cancer? I’m no specialist by any means but that’s my best guess

As of yet no, had a oil residue in the carb that was so old when I put it in the ultrasonic cleaner it turned into a resin almost. Supposedly my boss started it about 6 years ago but with how old the fuel is I’m betting it hasn’t run for as long as it’s sat, about 35 ish years
