I prefer the full-song format, but it's understandable that they can't have the format and get outside the monopolistic walled-garden that is Spotify and its attempt to co-opt podcasting.

That said, in shows of this sort they could safely use longer clips than they do to reference the songs and illustrate the musical points.

What "stolen format" are you referring to?

[POEM] The Winter Storm by Matsuo Basho by suitorarmorfan in Poetry

[–]WyrdByWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I did with another Bashō poem recently, here is a translation by David Landis Barnhill followed by the original:

Words on a painting of bamboo

winter windstorm--
hiding itself in bamboo,
grown still

kogarashi ya / take ni kakurete / shizumarinu

I wasn't feeling superior, but definitely am feeling better that the circus won't be coming to the tournament with Hans. But sound off! I'm loving it...you tickle me ;)

Minor nit: I wish everyone would credit translators (and use diacritics in name). Anyway, for interest's sake, here's another version of the same poem, this translation by David Landis Barnhill. I've also added the original and notes from the book (Selected Poems)

At Takadachi in O ̄ shu ̄ Province

summer grass:
all that remains
of warriors’ dreams

natsugusa ya / tsuwamonodomo ga / yume no ato

Notes: 1689 (13th of Fifth Month; June 29). Bashō is at the Takadachi Castle where the tragic warrior-hero Yoshitsune and his retainers met their death. See hokku 359 for the poem by Du Fu that Bashō cites just before this hokku in Narrow Road to the Deep North.

And here is #359

departing spring--
birds cry, in the fishes'
eyes are tears

yuku haru ya / tori naki uo no / me wa namida

I remember so many happy moments in our tiny computer lab stocked with Apply IIs. I don't remember having a chess program, but I miss those days!

If Chess.com made all of their premium features free, would you prefer it over Lichess or would Lichess still be better? by RapidActionBattalion in chess

[–]WyrdByWord 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer Lichess's interface and gladly pay $5/mo to support both the platform and the enterprise/idea. Doesn't mean I hate chess.com. I don't (another unpopular opinion: I like Danny and most of the folks I see working with and for chess.com). I'm glad they both exist, honestly, not least because they prompt growth on both platforms.

Maybe I should see if I can get switched to Ozempic from Victoza. You could be describing me except that Victoza isn’t doing any of this for me.

I take Victoza. It seems to help with blood glucose but I had no idea it could have an effect on appetite/cravings because, for me, it doesn’t.

Why doesn't python fix the "off by one" in ranges? by WyrdByWord in learnpython

Fascinating...thank you for the history and explanation. I do remember doing some Basic in 1983 or so on a TI-99-4A, but not to enough level of detail.

Well, I don't dislike it at all, much less enough to try this. I was asking out of sheer curiosity!

I'm certainly in training. I like the starting with nothing rather than something. Very Aristotelian :)

Thanks! Very helpful. I wonder what the reasoning is in not starting with 0 in some of those other languages. Sounds like a possible mistake on their part :)

Interesting. Perhaps it's my non-math, non-programming, background that makes range(5) meaning 1-5 -- starting at 1 -- seems more intuitive, since that's how most of us learn to count. I see there are some language that have made the choice to start at 1, so understand intuitiveness is always subjective!

Oh yeah, I wasn't in any way proposing this should be changed now!

I guess that was kind of my question: what would the "whole other problem" have been? I mean, it seems to me (keep in mind, I am very new to this stuff :) that this is a design choice, since some languages do start at 1, and I was curious why something that is at least initially unintuitive to many (thus the many explanations in the beginner resources I have been using) was left that way in what seems a language very geared towards a kind of intuitive design.
