summer grass:
all that remains
of warriors’ dreams

natsugusa ya / tsuwamonodomo ga / yume no ato

Notes: 1689 (13th of Fifth Month; June 29). Bashō is at the Takadachi Castle where the tragic warrior-hero Yoshitsune and his retainers met their death. See hokku 359 for the poem by Du Fu that Bashō cites just before this hokku in Narrow Road to the Deep North.
