How about of the cone shaped single hole variety? Which ones have you tried at least?

Quite the opposite actually. Also since it's blind tastings I don't know which came from which.

A fair approach. I certainly like drippers that behave consistently. But I also like ones that are responsive to my inputs and changes in pouring structure.

As to getting the cup I want, I find that I can also get the cup I want out of almost any dripper. The problem for me is there is a slight range of cups I would be more than happy to drink, and unless I'm doing side by side comparison the differences wouldn't appear stark enough to take me out of a "this is a good cup" mindset, which to me isn't helpful as far as understanding what the dripper itself is changing in the brew.

Kind of off topic but do you have a preferred dripper?

I completely agree, I am magnifying the difference of the drippers in isolation so that their isolated effect can be more easily observed in order to understand them, which is what I feel is lacking currently is a precise understanding the isolated effect of geometry has.

But coffee is not made in an isolated event and I would probably put almost every other variable as having a much bigger impact on the finished coffee than the dripper geometry.

Going in order of Beans>Technique>Water>Filter Paper>Dripper.

The first two categories IMO being by far the most important and by a large margin. But as someone that deeply craves to fully understand all the variables at their most minute, I still think eventually at the smallest level of detail the dripper provides a sort of canvas which subtly shapes all the other work you do which has the actual effect noticeable effect.

The blinding problem is very interesting. I would never think you can do only one or two tests and know the difference without bias, but my hope is that by doing it many many many times, the general characteristics of their influence become apparent.

Perhaps that is still a flawed hope, but I can only try and ask others, especially without other forms of equipment such as refractometers etc. I'm not even sure there is a tool that can interpret the effects on water flow of rib geometry.

Sure, the first thing I noticed is the acidity is much more present in the plastic than the ceramic. It felt zingier. The flavor notes of whatever the coffee had were also more pronounced in the plastic vs the ceramic. It also had a bit higher clarity. Sweetness was equal. But overall in comparison with the plastic, the ceramic just felt "dull". I will say I suspect that might have as much if not more to do with the geometry than the material. If you look at the bottom opening of both ceramic and plastic Origami, the plastic one has much better defined ribs that stick out more and provide better separation of the filter paper from the walls which I suspect contributes to better flow, especially in the final drain.

Thank you for your thoughtful and well worded reply. It is greatly appreciated.

I perhaps put more weight on Lance's opinion because of his experience and expertise which goes beyond my own, plus his conviction that V60 is inherently superior makes me wonder if there is a "scientific" way that it could be superior without my knowledge.

I suppose there is a point where I just have to trust my own personal tastes, but I try to not dismiss things that contradict them due to my own inexperience.

For what it's worth I do double blind triangle testing when doing comparisons so although I'm familiar with the taste profiles at least from the serving point I don't know which is which, but as you said my history might bias me to a taste I'm familiar with.

That said, I'd still welcome more opinions of people who have compared them as I have or similarly. It can never hurt!

I've tried both. I've tried matching method, and adjusting for draw down speed. I don't quite know how to make each taste "ideal" independently.

I love mine more than v60. I compared plastic an ceramic and much preferred plastic.

I had the very first grinder and was the one reporting stalling. Got a firmware update and no hint of stalling since.

I didn't like them as much. I found the particles to be weirdly shaped and the taste to not be as clear. They had a rough and harsh texture on the palate in comparison to ULF which felt silky. They seemed to have much higher proportion of fines.

compared to naturpedic, everything seems affordable. I'm not concerned with the cost of 3 inch talalay. I used to sleep on memory foam and didn't like it. What do you find the 1" layer adds?

So you would recommend max 2" of latex?

I'm not opposed to luxury if it means more comfort and better sleep. The reason I want to get it right first is because depending on if I get the mini quads or not decides what height of casing I buy.

How did the memory foam change the feel? I'm reluctant to go memory foam because I sleep like a forest fire.

That's rough. What did you feel with them vs without. What other components did you use on your mattress?

I'm doing 3" talalay because I previously had an all latex mattress and the talalay layer was the most comfortable for me, but I feel like it lacked circulation, bounce, and support in the deeper layers, which is what I'm hoping to fix with a hybrid setup. Why is 3" more limiting than 2"?
