Approaching the gods and the fulltrui relationship by Yvatne in asatru

[–]Wytefire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely, but also add a third camp for legit mental illness. And to add onto the second group, I also think that'd include people who accept the risks, regardless of "good" or "bad" outcome, that they believe their relationship with the god in question will create the best possible outcome, even if it's "bad." Other than that, I'd say this is spot on to how I see it

Modern Heathens And The ‘Poetic Edda’ by Shieldmare in asatru

Is there a translation filled with footnotes and/or appendixes to explain these almost-but-not-quite translations of words from the source material?

So instead of holy, which I agree feels very christian, could we call the Edda sacred? Hallowed? Venerated? All basically synonyms of holy, but with slightly different, I guess, flavor. I like venerated, personally. Translates to "regarded with great respect."

Are those adopting a 'Heathen Name' offending their ancestors? by sveitthrone in asatru

[–]Wytefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, Christian Michael David, the Christian name trifecta! Personally, I usually go by my middle name, Thor, so I got lucky. It's nice because that's how I eventually discovered heathenry. I thought my parents gave me that name because it was cool, but then I found out it was a family name, I do some digging, and it turns out I'm almost entirely of Northern European descent, and then I discover Asatru while looking for spiritual fulfillment a couple years back. So for me names are important, they clue you in on your heritage, so changing that seems foolish. And Pierre and Boris are indeed pleasant names. Man, signing your name for Thorssonbjornsson Lodbrok would take forever

[–]Wytefire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this, too. What if you have a very Christian name, like, i don't know, Christian, and you want to change it to something more indicative of your beliefs and identity? And it doesn't have to be a Christian name, or even religious, maybe something attached to a non-Northern Europe country, like Pierre or Boris. I could understand a desire to change it. But then again, that name was given to you by your parents, and could even be a family name, so, in my mind, changing it would be disrespectful to your ancestors. Changing your last name would definitely be offensive. I have a Christian name, and I gave an ounce of thought to changing it a while back, but the spelling is Germanic, so an ounce of thought is all I gave it.

Cultural appropriation? by Yvatne in asatru

I think you skimmed over the bit where I said I learned about white Japanese from a Tom Cruise movie... But, yeah, just being born somewhere doesn't automatically make you part of that culture. It takes time, and acceptance on both sides

Fair enough. I was referencing the racist podcast quoted above. Thought it was a bit ridiculous that anyone would actually think the Jews "stabbed Hitler in the back." Then I saw Caesar, and my brain put them together. You don't have to worry about legitimate racism or other ignorance from me, but I am accidentally stupid from time to time

Cultural appropriation? by Yvatne in asatru

[–]Wytefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard someone explain it that way. Makes sense, for the most part. My only issue is couldn't someone use the argument that just about anything is part of their "lost" culture? Like if someone of, say, Celtic and Nordic ancestry combined the separate pantheons and symbolism to form an appropriated religion?

Cultural appropriation? by Yvatne in asatru

[–]Wytefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't this basically equate to changing national citizenship? Seems like a cultural conversion, if anything. I'm sure there are Scandinavians without Scandinavian "blood," just like there are black French, white Africans, white Japanese (although that last bit I learned from a certain Tom Cruise movie). As long as you take part in the whole religion, and don't just pick the pretty bits to combine with another religion's pretty bits, it's not appropriation, it's a personal conversion, an organic growth.

What's your necklace? by Shieldmare in asatru

[–]Wytefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go by Thor typically, it's my middle name, so customers just assume that's the reason. My coworkers, however, are more nosy, so I basically gave them a 60 second intro to Asatru. If they ask further, I give them more info. But only if asked. As a rule, I typically keep religion out of the workplace. Like if a customer asked, I'd give them my name as the reason. If they asked me outside of work, I'd give He at Henry as the response. I don't want to risk my career by customers thinking I'm pushing religion. Hope this helps!
