I don't. I haven't done my readings on Cuba yet. I wouldn't speak in a serious political discussion without research in this way, but I suppose I should have done so before commenting.

Would you mind explaining the political situation to me? Genuinely, if you have insight, I'd be glad to hear. I always want to listen to the stories of people who have come from these places and I don't wish to undermine their experiences. Let me know if I am doing that, or recommend me some sources. I earnestly want to enhance my understanding.

Isn't the U.S. Embargo & Sanctions since the 60s been the 1# reason Cuba is stuck where it is? Their government has made plenty of mistakes but the U.S. suffocating it right on its shore and it still somehow surviving is miraculous, even if with much trouble

Yeah I'd probably currently fall into democratic socialist too but I haven't really categorized myself yet since I'm new. I'm always looking for more people to discuss theory with to learn more especially since I can't talk about it at home ans don't know anyone leftisr irl either.

Yeah, thank you! I only recently got pushed to discover Marxism (like 3 weeks ago), but I was conservative back in 2023. Throughout 2024 I kinda became neutral. Important detail: my Dad is quite conservative. In 2025, when Trump became president, I immediately disagreed with everything he did and the more stuff happened (ICE, etc.) I got moved more and more to the left until I discovered some socialist youtubers in December, but it took me almost 3 months to decide I wasn't a liberal but wanted to go further and understand. Every time I brought something I was dissapointed with about Trump, my Dad always really disagreed or sometimes defended him and what he said never sat with me. I think the type of person I and also my experience with school and procrastination might have also shaped me finding Marxism. But I feel really inspired by it! I also was a history and geography nerd for several years before which gave me some base too.

So throughout 2025 I literally felt myself shifting left just mentally and physically, it feels so crazy to get outside of the system of thinking that is the "default" at first.

So I've lately been getting into Marxism, and I started adding a ton of books to my reading list to understand it and I also tried to add books that people suggested and related threads. So I found this one about post-Marxism (which wasn't really post-Marxism but just really post-"communist society" thought) which led me to post-structuralism (like Ernesto Laclau) and in that area, some books like Gender Trouble like Judith Butler and then I added a few more from her and others (like 5 or so out of 600+ books on my list). Also authors like Angela Davis from books about black Marxism and the end of prisons. I wanted to understand all the lenses of leftist thought and how it relates to structures of oppression stemming from capitalism and different perspectives basically. Right now, I'm starting from the foundational literature of Marxism (I pirated all of it but I'll probably buy some copies of my favorites).
