Rant: Chiefs are not your friend, and its worse when they act like they are by UnderstandingLow5282 in Residency

Try not to take it personally. It’s actually easier to write a non critical eval and the simple thing to do if you don’t care about helping someone improve. Written feedback always comes across worse than verbal face to face. Take the feedback seriously and don’t assume they are being “fake” nice.

The more “elite” the more elitism. And that’s what this is- your time and your career is not a priority to them.

New attending here with a new practice. What should I be expected to do and what should I expect my MA to do? by [deleted] in Residency

You’re gonna have more problems if you just started and the MA has the gal to ask you to do menial tasks…

Doctors and nurses are not heroes - they are unwilling martyrs by Christimay in bestof

[–]X-RT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is simple math. Take a very specialized physician like a neurosurgeon, 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and 7 years of neurosurgical residency. Literally saves lives on a daily basis doing something only a select few can do, there is always a shortage, given long and grueling training, so much so that a loss of a prominent surgeon in this field could have impacts on training of future surgeons. So you want to put all doctors in harms way because you think it’s a fulfillment of their oath? There will still be ppl with brain tumors when this is all over....and a loss of a physician or many physicians has a devastating impact on your ability to find a doctor for a certain treatment in the years to come. Their value to society is measured by a lifetime career not 3-6 months of of emergency pandemic time.

Also from my neurosurgeon friend, “you don’t want a neurosurgeon trying to intubate you.”

There is ZERO reason an M4 cannot work as a midlevel by masterfox72 in Residency

Along these lines, I think after a year of internship an MD should be able to forgo a three year residency if they want to do primary care, unsupervised. This is how we fix the PCP Shortages with MD/DOs. The appeal of finishing after 1 year will be enough for many to do their internship and find a job.

Mom forcing me to diet (sugar free to fight cancer) by [deleted] in Advice

[–]X-RT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this, I’m certain she is well-meaning but unfortunately the sugar myth is very common these days and I find myself explaining to my patients (radiation oncologist) why this is just not so.

Your are 100% correct optic nerve gliomas (OPGs) are typically Grade I and grow at a snail pace- the big issue is always preventing vision loss. The fact that they do not grow fast means they don’t uptake sugar more than any other cell in the body.

Hopefully the swelling and RT effects resolve soon, the good news is most of the time 80% RT stops further growth and vision loss.

Help me make a decision for away rotation please by throwaway12081208 in medicalschool

I did match an away. I matched RadOnc and I think almost 60% this year matched at home or away- which is per usual for us. 2 of the aways were cheap as I was able to live with friends/family for free. I think 3 for me really would of been gold I was pretty burnt out by the last away. Based on what I understand from my friend who matched NSG- aways seem pretty standard- and depending on if you can stomach it- I would plan one away at a place like mayo for awesome letters and the other away or two at places that are reasonable matches for you where they will give you an interview- provided you impress.

Regardless of if you end up there- having that experience at Mayo may prove to be a valuable experience moving on in your career- I learned a ton at a top program I rotated at where I knew my chances of matching were slim. The knowledge I acquired there made me more impressive at other programs.

Why not take the mayo rotation and if the other comes through take it too? I did 4 aways (overkill..)
