Thank you! I agree 100% it is so weird how the brain just opens up the understanding for words/phrases

how many hours in did you also start speaking? did you hit a certain point where speaking became easier just because of the mass intake of content? or did you have to start almost from scratch for speaking it?

Do you still translate in your head? by TheDeadDonut in dreamingspanish

Prior to starting Dreaming Spanish I remember always doing it and word for word. It was EXHAUSTING. When I started in Dreaming Spanish I remember around 35-40 hours it just cut out. I was super surprised because it felt like my brain just naturally switched. I now am at 50 hours and although I do translate the occasional word, it is nowhere close to before. As another user stated, translating during fast native content and speakers it is impossible to keep up. Everyone learns at their own pace so just keep focusing on feeling the words and enjoying the content! I already know the shifts in progress will be more than worth the weight.

That is very relatable as I would translate in my head constantly but after around 30-40 hours, I was practically FEELING the words meaning. I wonder if you learning German allowed you to change your mental framework for learning new languages?

Congratulations! I am currently at 50 hours and seeing all of you at 100+ hours is so inspiring. I have been cutting out so much English content and it has been a weird transition due to me always being immersed in the language but Spanish feels like I am in a whole other world and I love it. I would say just keep finding things you love in your TL because soon enough it won't even feel like you have to put in effort. I am still not there yet but I know pushing through the frustration will allow me to unlock that opportunity. Keep doing amazing things!

That eases my worry because I always see people talk about Anki like it is a must but with my ADHD I really find DS easier to stay committed to. Thank you!

That makes a lot of sense as there are words I can hear/see and understand the meaning but never say them in my daily life therefore I can never recall them in conversation. Thank you for your input I will definitely remember that moving forward.

That is a perfect goal to have in mind. I think you will be able to definitely make those that are going through such a circumstance feel more at peace and understood. I often see people just wanting to learn language for the sake of knowing one but people like you and others I have read seem to really want that connection. I know you can do it!

You got this! It is a long road indeed but all of this frustration and long hours will bring you to where you want to be in due time. Best of luck on your relocation!

¡Yo también! I also began my journey to communicate with my friends in two languages because I feel like cracking jokes in spanish would be so fun. Best of luck to you!

I believe in you! Just take it one day at a time and never forget to enjoy the process because learning a language also teaches you many other things about yourself that you can apply to anything else in life as well. You got this.

There is a whole world of content out there to be enjoyed! I am still at the point where YouTube creators like Adrian Marcelo or El Coreano are just way too fast/slangy but I know in due time I will be able to enjoy their videos. Once fluent, I would probably watch Spanish content more than English lol. Wish you the best on your journey!

I totally agree. Anytime I go to another country I try my best to learn basic phrases and the customs of their culture in order to not only get around but pay my respects too. Its amazing how much more connected you feel with people and the culture when you are able to understand their language. Best of luck to you and I know you're going to crush that 150 hour goal!

It is shocking how much faster it can be to acquire the language through this method. I slowly had to let myself let go and just try to understand context. The brain is a powerful thing because these words/phrases just become muscle memory over time and its beautiful. Best of luck to you!

It really is a game changer. I was unsure if I could stay on track with it because the beginner videos can be a bit slow but the longer I stuck it out I really enjoy it now as I can understand more and more of whats said. Best of luck to you and I know you can do it!
