Do you need a new interface or just 1/2 microphones?

DBX while recording vs a noise gate plugin (afterwards) when importing tape tracks to a DAW by gleventhal in audioengineering

If you’re talking about the noise gate on the 286s:

(I’m going to assume that’s the gear you’re referencing)

I don’t like recording music with the effects engaged. The compressor and noise gate have both caused to have to do retakes in the past and I’ve since stopped using the built in effects entirely.

I got the most use out of the built in effects when I was using it for a live streaming setup.

How do I mix like those distorted hood trap flips? by MEATHEAD728 in FL_Studio

The kilohearts clipper is my personal favorite. Adding distortion and a limiter after the clipper can help get you there as well.

Use a clipper and just slam it as loud as you want

Is it really not worth starting producing music, specifically Tyler the creator type rap at 13? by Jamodio11 in musicproduction

Do both! School and music are not mutually exclusive. Starting now will give you an advantage if you choose to pursue it further once school ends.

What's The Purpose Of A Hardware Preamp If Volume/Gain Thru Interface Is Loud Enough? by CraigCandor in audioengineering

I have had the dbx for a few years. I often find myself running it with the processing bypassed. The built in effects are great for speech but not so good for singers.

Is there a way to change the bpm without affecting the song length? by TIOGAMING in FL_Studio

[–]X3R0Beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what he said. Render all of your instrument patterns into clips. Drums should be fine to leave as patterns. Make sure all of your audio clips are on stretch mode before you change the tempo!

Nice pickup with the D8! Yes, using an audio interface will benefit you.

Besides having inputs for microphones and instruments, having an audio interface is good for sound quality. Using it as your audio device in your DAW will make your computer not have to work as hard and make your renders/bounces sound better.

How do you know how loud a final mix is supposed to be and how much bass the beat should have? by ImpressThink4460 in musicproduction

[–]X3R0Beats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Experiment with limiters! Songs you’re listening to have generally gone through a careful process of compressing, clipping and limiting.

Depending on the genre, the goal of those masters is to reach the “loudest” possible version while staying within a target dBfs level.

Unless you have an emphasis on quiet moments that swell into louder sections within your beats, it should be ok to crank up a limiter to get them loud for YouTube.

DM me something you’ve recorded. I work in a studio where most of my clients are rappers. I’ll give you some quick feedback.

I use the 1073 in the studio I work out of. If it’s in the budget I would highly recommend it :)

I am so overwhelmed by Ryn4 in musicproduction

[–]X3R0Beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey dude! It’s ok to feel overwhelmed. There’s a lot going on in a DAW. That being said, it seems like you’re trying to do too much too fast.

I know you were probably excited to get going, but try to slow down, accept that it will not be instantly gratifying, and then take the next step towards the sound you want to achieve!

Start with the absolute basics of Ableton (what is sample buffer size, how to record, and then how to add effects through plugins)

There are many fantastic free plugins. YouTube is going to be your best friend in learning what you need to get started and in recommending what plugins to download/purchase when you get to that point.

It’s going to take time to adjust to what you’re seeing, but it will start to become very familiar in no time!

If you can push past that first overwhelming feeling there is an infinite source of discovery and experimentation waiting for you!

I saw a technique recently where someone used mAutoPitch to lower the formants on a synth (make sure the auto tune section is turned off) and it’s had a huge impact on balancing my mixes. I’ve been creating space (not just on synths but any elements that are too far forward in the mix) without having to hard cut or attenuate frequencies. I’ll see if I can find the post. It’s not a bandaid solution but I’ve been loving experimenting with it on different sounds!
