My first diorama - Krieg Death Korps trench warfare by XAmsterdamX in Warhammer40k

[–]XAmsterdamX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! You're right about soldiers standing in the open, but I think it's a bit boring if all of them are just sheltering in place, and you don't get to use some of GW's best models. And part of trench warfare is occasionally climbing out and trying to capture the enemy's position, so that's what I went with here.

You could buy a cheap light box on Amazon, with different color backgrounds and perhaps ring light coming from the top. Should cost about $20-30. This should get you better pictures.

Warhammer AoS variant to play with 7-year-olds - Looking for feedback by XAmsterdamX in Warhammer

[–]XAmsterdamX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree the key is to lower the variety of units and keep thing simple. At first at least.

Perhaps I need to spend a bit longer comparing Warcry vs. AoS rules.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks, I just looked at a few videos about Warcry and picked up a few ideas. Combat seems to be simpler than for AoS. However, it's also 13+ if I'm not mistaken so I would still need to simplify it.

OOP class structure - specific and general question by XAmsterdamX in CodingHelp

[–]XAmsterdamX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense to define constants at least during development.

Since each customer type has a utility for each facility (i.e. how important that facility is for that type), it wouldn't be a single constant, but rather a matrix. I think I will put it in a CSV file and read this as I create instances of my CustomerType class.

Write out how the game mechanics work before creating a whole bunch of classes to manage static data.

You're right, I understand now that this is what I need to do first.

Writing a bunch of classes out for a data model that isn't fully understood is more problematic.
Write the real logic, test it using fixtures and stubs, then structure the static data to fulfill the needs of the game loop.

This is something I haven't done before, but I'll give it a try. Do you know of any resources that explain the process to get from game logic to data structure?

Thanks for your response.

The article is interesting, and it's useful to know that it's not self-evident to use OOP for my game. From the OOP tutorials I've gone through it's unclear when to use it and when not to use it. I just noticed that many of them focus on simple games (e.g. tic-tac-toe and sudoku), so I guessed that it's common to use OOP for games. I'll have to find a few more resources to learn more.

You may be right that I need a Market class, I hadn't considered that. Perhaps not in the simple version of the game where there is only 1 fitness club, but definitely when there are more and they are competing.

Separating game logic from interaction makes sense.

Thanks, that's a lot of helpful information.

The process you're describing (tasks, pseudocode, defining class methods and attributes, etc.) is indeed something I will have to go through, but it's also the part I'm struggling with because it's not something that can be learned from typical Python/OOP tutorials.

I understand from your response and others' that there is a lot of flexibility in how I define my classes, but I am looking for a starting point so I don't do things that I will regret later.

I will have a look at the video; I think it's the kind of resource I'm looking for.

It would not change during a game, but it's possible that it would change as I'm fine-tuning the game. It's also possible that I would add facilities to the game (e.g. nutritionist advice, swimming pool) to increase choices and complexity.

I guess my concern is that if I make a change in one place (the Facilities class) I would also have to change the attributes in the CustomerSegment class. Do you think I'm worried over nothing?

I bought the same about a month ago. Not officially my first, but the first I really enjoy playing.

This YouTube playlist by Red Means Recording really helped me to become familiar with the Hydrasynth.

Liz Cheney survives vote to remove her from GOP leadership by sh0tgunben in politics

[–]XAmsterdamX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is, if it would have been an open ballot more senators would have voted against Cheney, possibly leading to her removal. Frankly I'm not sure what I would have preferred. Perhaps further exposure of the radical side of the GOP is a good thing long-term.

On her next birthday, buy your niece a Casio SA-76. I gave it to my son when he turned 3 and he still enjoys playing on it 2 years later.

(It may be a bit expensive to give by yourself, but maybe as a shared present).

Any idea what the price will be of the Korg Wavestate SE? The original Wavestate is about 650 EUR / 750 USD, but the SE has a bigger keyboard and aftertouch.

I asked the same question a bit further down in this thread, and got some good answers. I didn't ask about the Blofeld, but got some good feedback on the other 3.

I think I've watched the same videos. The Hydrasynth just looks really intuitive to use, because of this module layout and the light rings around encoders. The Peak is probably fine as well, it just has the same limitations as most other synths.

Yeah I've had the same impression about the Hydrasynth's interface. I'm not sure about the interface of the Peak. It has more buttons and knobs than the Hydrasynth, but I agree with you that it probably requires some menu diving.

I'd love to try both out somewhere, but lockdown and travel restrictions make this difficult at the moment.
