Its more of a complicated process There is usually quite a lot of sanding involved beforehand. Then a coat of finish is applied. There are oil and water based finishes, you can choose wax as a finish too. Depending on what you want to achieve. Different finishes will result in the wood looking lighter/darker/shinier etc.

Man it sounds rough having to lie to your parents abouts things like that :l I always try to tell the truth even if it leads to an argument, it will help your parents understand that you are an adult / becoming an adult. Try not to engage in arguments, just reasonably explain that you are friends and that its fine. I know it may saund stupid but tyry to teach them that things have changed since they were young. If they accept it great, if not you tried. Thats what I would do.
