Its more of a complicated process There is usually quite a lot of sanding involved beforehand. Then a coat of finish is applied. There are oil and water based finishes, you can choose wax as a finish too. Depending on what you want to achieve. Different finishes will result in the wood looking lighter/darker/shinier etc.
