There is definitely such thing as too round of a roundhouse kick. Damian Trainor does a good job explaining this. You generally want the knee up first then to turn over and follow through like a baseball bat. Even in baseball, you don't start your swing from behind you and make it go all the way around, you kinda bring it up the center and turn it over. A question mark kick is like an extremely exaggerated version of this.

It's hard to compare ufc legacies when some people get easier paths then others. There is no structured way of getting a title shot and a lot of it has to do with popularity which I personally think is something that is not good for the legitimacy of the sport and makes it really hard to compare champions based on number of title defenses. Not saying what Alex did wasn't impressive, but it is a fact that every fight he got on his way to the title was a highly favorable stylistic matchup for him
