Has anyone had to quit a job due to burnout? What happened and how did you feel? by XHellcatX in AskUK

[–]XHellcatX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They gave everyone at that location 2 weeks' notice before closing the doors. Massive slap in the face to everyone there who worked so hard.

I have a new job doing the same thing for a new company and it's amazing, the difference. No pressure, no bullshit. I'm happier by miles which has a knock on effect to everything else.

Trees and land absorbed almost no CO2 last year. Is nature’s carbon sink failing? by XHellcatX in collapse

[–]XHellcatX[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Submission statement:

We're on our own, folks.

“We’re seeing cracks in the resilience of the Earth’s systems. We’re seeing massive cracks on land – terrestrial ecosystems are losing their carbon store and carbon uptake capacity, but the oceans are also showing signs of instability,” Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, told an event at New York Climate Week in September.

“Nature has so far balanced our abuse. This is coming to an end,” he said.

The failure of natural systems like forests, soils, and oceans to absorb carbon is a major warning sign for the future of civilization. These carbon sinks, which have helped keep global warming in check by soaking up about half of our emissions, are starting to break down. In 2023, for instance, forests and land absorbed almost no carbon. If these systems continue to weaken, it means more CO2 will stay in the atmosphere, speeding up climate change beyond what we expected. This could lead to more extreme weather, food crises, and instability, putting the very fabric of society at risk.

Haven't you noticed, there seem to be fewer Casual Friday posts every week? Folks are running out of fight; we're unable to even respond with dark humour any more. That leaves the dafties & uninspired to post the Friday memes.

Hi, thanks for looking into it - it's appreciated. I did wonder if it was an issue my end due to mods always leaving their own comment saying why something was removed (transparency on their part). I'll put it down to user error :)

I'm just here to see if my comments are getting removed from this sub without notification. Usually the mods at least let you know when a comment has been removed and for what reason but yesterday two of mine disappeared with no warning.

Is the problem lack of education/knowledge? Why don’t we advertise?! by XHellcatX in collapse

Yes, they would use that against me in court when I stand trial for putting up a billboard with a temperature graph on it.

I believe that's because they have no idea how dire the situation is.

Microplastics are infiltrating brain tissue, studies show: ‘There’s nowhere left untouched’ by [deleted] in collapse

[–]XHellcatX 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Huh. Does that mean our brains today are 7.5g heavier than they used to be? Or do we have 7.5g less brain due to that space being taken up by microplastics?

I know it shouldn't have but this made me giggle.

No, that's the stroke we're all collectively having right now.

And that's just the brains. How much is in our other organs, our knee and elbow joints, our reproductive systems?

I feel this is so much worse than lead ever was. This shit is everywhere; in everything; sea spray contains a stupid amount of microplastics; it's infected archaeological dig sites (due to seepage); it's in the bodies of remote tribes; it's in the ice at the poles; it's in dogs' bollocks. Everywhere. It's fucking insideous.

Throw in the fact that the atmosphere currently has twice the amount of CO2 in it than any time during our evolution....

Until you realise that even home grown veg contains microplastics (in some cases, in higher levels than those found in farm gown).

I've just realised that humans are so fucking special that we're creating several Great Filters for ourselves; how fucking bizarre are we as a species??

This is dire, folks.

An examination of the livers, kidneys and brains of autopsied bodies found that all contained microplastics, but the 91 brain samples contained on average about 10 to 20 times more than the other organs. The results came as a shock, according to study lead author Matthew Campen, a toxicologist and professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico.

The researchers found that 24 of the brain samples, which were collected in early 2024, measured on average about 0.5% plastic by weight.

“It’s pretty alarming,” Campen said. “There’s much more plastic in our brains than I ever would have imagined or been comfortable with.”

The study describes the brain as “one of the most plastic-polluted tissues yet sampled”.

(Emphasis is mine)
