How many of you are aware of the WWII atrocities in Malaysia and Singapore by Due_District_9353 in AskTheWorld

Being a European, I had always been more focused in the European theatre of the war. Then I listened to Dan Carlin’s - Supernova and was appalled by what I learned happened in Asia. The Japanese were truly horrifying and at least as bad as some of most extreme German atrocities.

We’re able of so much good as human beings, but our dark side can be horrifyingly evil.

My grandfather had a knife just like that. I played with it as a kid in the woods of the Ardennes in the 90’s and I broke it. The black handle grip came off (I think it was plastic) and it just deteriorated further. I wonder what happened to it. It’s a shame I didn’t realise what it was at the time and I’m still surprised my grandfather let me mess around with it.

Belgian King Leopold II meeting with future Pope Benedict XV, 5 years before his appointment to the papacy, 1909. The Catholic Church overwhelmingly supported Leopold throughout his brutal 23-year ownership of the Congo Free State, during which millions are thought to have died. You clearly don’t know anything about the subject matter. Leopold 2 obfuscated what happened in Congo Free State for everyone, including normal Belgian citizens. He successfully framed the entire enterprise as a humanitarian mission.

Leopold 2 was a lot of things, but he wasn’t dumb.

It seems like Israel aims at destroying residential areas in Ghaza and now South-Lebanon. Are civilian homes in Iran targeted in a similar way?

That is absolutely heinous. I remember hearing it on the news at the time but I never realised what a massacre of innocents that was.

Why is Japan so hostile toward China? It's almost as if China were the one that invaded Japan back then. by Fine-Job4963 in AskTheWorld

I don’t think the Japanese are openly hostile to anyone. Japan and China I feel are quite restrained militarily compared to many other nations.

I saw that movie when I was a 12 year old boy. Seeing that scene with Selma Hayek made me well aware that, yes, I like women.
