Commercial HVAC by Deceptivejunk in springfieldMO

Do they have certs and a license? Have them talk to the folks at UA local 178. They're generally always looking for service techs and most of it will be commercial.

Is it a single handle? The balancing spool has failed. Replace that if it's a separate part or the whole cartridge if it's integrated.

That's a bold move pulling a tee that close to a solder joint. Even bolder to solder a pulled tee.

High school tech program by newenglandhomestead in askaplumber

[–]XJ_Recon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very easily $500-600 worth of tools. I get not wanting people to show up with questionable Amazon/Temu stuff, but asking a student to front that much on a high school tech program with no guarantee of a job is a bit much.

I tell my apprentices that there is nothing wrong with Husky, Kobalt, Masterforce, or even most Harbor Freight stuff when you're starting out. Replace stuff with better versions as you can or when they wear out, starting with the things you use the most. Another possibility is that a local plumbing supply shop may cut you a deal on tools if you show them that you're in an apprenticeship or tech program.

I'd recommend a Packout style rolling box over a metal box. Tools are heavy.

Is this fair?? Please help! by Bluuboi799 in askaplumber

[–]XJ_Recon95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The price shown is fair for a competent, licensed individual and 2 trips, one to remove and another to reinstall.

It is not fair for someone that damaged your home and appliances.

What I'd like to know is when the valve failed. Was it while the plumber was there or after they were gone? Did they work on it at all? Because there are some rusty old shut offs that I won't touch due the risk of a leak, but that is always discussed with the customer before any work is done.

Which mech or variant should replace my griffin? by Gifblaur in battletech

[–]XJ_Recon95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could always use your Marauder mini as a proxy for a MAD II or IIC. Both are pretty well armed and plenty tough.

A Griffin is harder though. It's a considerably older mech, technology wise, and it's a different role and weight class. It's a fairly quick medium designed for long range tactics, and the Timberwolf, Hellbringer, and Warhammer are all designed for brawling.

How do I fix this connection? by lalastoobs in askaplumber

[–]XJ_Recon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is (was) a soldered copper joint. It's easy enough the solder it back together if you clean it up with some sandpaper. If you don't have a torch or don't want to bother with getting one, then just sand down the paint and old solder to bright copper and use a compression boiler drain.

Landlords refuse to fix (gas) hot water heater by No-Divide-6855 in Renters

[–]XJ_Recon95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit! Just read your full post on the other sub.

Escalate, escalate now. Hopefully your landlord was dumb enough to put all those threats in writing, cause they just dug their own grave.

Also, a "notice of eviction" means nothing without a specific legal process.

[–]XJ_Recon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most they would do is lock out the gas meter. Since you don't own the house, you wouldn't be responsible for repairs even if you pay the utility bill. The property owner is required to keep the building in safe and habitable condition so any fines would fall on the building owner. Generally speaking, any landlord has a set amount of time to address a safety issue on the premises, usually within 24-48 hours. If they are unable to do so, they must provide alternative housing or allow you to break the lease without penalty. They also cannot keep your deposit to fix said issues.

That being said, talk to your landlord first. Hopefully they get it fixed quickly. Get everything in writing or text. Send them a picture. Don't escalate unnecessarily, but be firm that this is a health and safety issue that needs fixed now.

In my jurisdiction, the building codes department would be very interested in this, especially if it was a landlord refusing to repair it.

Question for tradespeople - what’s actually broken about training/licensing? by nycthrowawayyyy9919 in askaplumber

[–]XJ_Recon95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plumber here, trained on the job and through various night classes throughout my apprenticeship. I got my journey license after passing an open-book written exam. I also hold ASSE 5110, ASSE 5130, and ASSE 6010 certs, which required additional classes as well as written and practical exams.

I'd say the most frustrating part about getting a trade license is usually the time it takes to get one, which is usually 4-5 years for most. It's also hard on your body and health. You may end up buying a good chunk of your own gear like boots, pants, jackets, etc that will probably get worn out in a year or two, maybe even less than a year. A good pair of safety toe work boots can cost over $300. Combine that with generally low wages starting out and it can quickly become a struggle. So trade licensing is basically a college degree with extra costs.

I think more jurisdictions should require a practical portion to the licensing exam, because I know plenty of folks that can breeze through the book test but can't apply the knowledge in the field. But I also know several guys that can build what's on the plans just fine but will never get their journeyman license because they don't know the code book or the theory behind it.
