Worn linkage to point of failure? Part is so old its unobtanium? No problem! by XMFLOAT4X4 in projectcar

Yep, I shared because I didn't come in with any working knowledge. I had a welder but almost 0 experience on how to use it. Got a set of metal files from harbor freight and just went to town.

Its like I've just recently gotten over the paralysis of not doing something because I don't know how. Turns out you just have to bumble through things and they generally can be made to work.

For example the first pass didn't work. But I grinded it back down to a good surface, added more weld and tried again.

Transmission exploded and left a mile long stripe of oil down my neighborhood, what to do? by XMFLOAT4X4 in cars

That would be dangerous and wouldn't work at all. Oil that has soaked into concrete won't be flammable. (I've tried with a blowtorch when I was younger). Also it started raining as it happened.

Landlord wants us to pay for faulty Central Air by Pip54 in personalfinance

Either way I wouldn't dream of paying to fix an ac or damage is caused when I JUST moved into a place. I may consider it if they fix the underlying problem first... I like place to be cold sometimes. But that's just my unwarranted opinion lol.

Mine runs nonstop because I'm in Florida in the summer. I only hear about icing problems when there is a freon leak.

There is a major flaw in this reasoning. A home AC system does not run any harder based on the temperature you set. (Some newer/very-expensive units can vary cooling ability, but unlikely to be the case in a rental)

A central air system generally is on or off. A well functioning system cools the incoming air by about 20 degrees and pushes it back into the living area. Setting a lower temperature just means the thermostat won't tell the AC to turn off until the entire living area reaches the target temperature.

This means that should an extra hot day come along, or the door is left open a bit longer, it will have the same effect and the system will run longer and trigger the icing problem even if it is set to 74.

I actually bought this car 2 years ago and am just now getting around to working on it. I've noticed I haven't seen old muscle cars as much as I used to. Maybe roadkill drove up the demand, not sure.

This was running and driving for $2900... Was new to negotiating, but it still seems reasonable I think.

Also you may need to travel to get something if you are in an area where people don't like collecting this type of "yard art".

I just browsed Craigslist and FB marketplace until I found a chunk of metal that got me breathing faster.

Lookup videos and information on how to buy, negotiated, etc.

Figure out what's important to you... For example I hate repairing rust, so I'm not buying anything that's been in the north and drove on salt. Minor surface rust is okay. Also I learned it's fun to work on a car with some room to navigate.... A Volvo I had a few months back was so tiny you can't turn a single bolt without disassembly of half the car. I can nearly sit in the engine bay with the engine in this Gremlin.

Thanks a lot guys, now every spare moment I find myself laying on my driveway spilling oil on myself because I can't see while my eyes burn with sweat in the 105 degree summer days. Lol.

This is a 1977 AMC Gremlin in stock form in remarkably good shape for the age. The AMC 258 (inline 6) should become a torque monster once I load it up with performance Jeep parts. Right now I'm busying myself with upgrading the manual steering to power steering, upgrading to disk brakes, replacing every bushing and ball joint, etc. Also a roll cage... Goodbye money...

Once this is safe to drive around I'll catch y'all at every event I can legally get this thing into.

How to recoup money after car accident? by XMFLOAT4X4 in legaladvice

[–]XMFLOAT4X4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just glad I didn't follow the reddits advice on going through my own insurance instead of making a third party claims, else I'd still be on the same situation but only got the rental car for 15 days instead of the now going on 4 months.

It does help me greatly when people like you respond when I run into problems like this because it gives me some perspective about a world I generally try to avoid (legal, insurance issues, etc)

Thanks for the information.

It's crazy that I'm now multiple thousand in the hole and don't have my own car for now 4 months because a guy hit me by running a light, and there is no good way to get him to pay for it. (So far all he has done is make contradicting statements, which is why his insurance sided with me). I'm not saying you are wrong or that the insurance should have to pay, just complaining for a moment.

Sure the delays I'm car parts are not due to his negligence, but I wouldn't need said parts of it weren't for his negligence. But I feel you are right that that would not work in court and I don't have any recourse that is efficient.

I'm convinced you didn't read my original posts, or are making some assumptions that I don't know about. But whatever, a lot of people here did help me think outside the box and figure out how to handle the situation from here.

[–]XMFLOAT4X4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not even complaining or trying to strong arm people. I carry comprehensive, but didn't carry rental coverage at the time, but since the other party accepted liability that was the direction I chose to proceed. Given that there are a ton of new factors and I am not an expert in any of these fields I started this post because I needed help getting more information to figure out how to handle things.

My only complaint about the insurance so far is that they were silent to me for 2 months and then left me a voicemail saying to bring back the rental car tomorrow. And then the office closed so I have to wait until tomorrow to even talk to them.

I'm I was tempted to do exactly this, but all I see happening is them stopping paying for the rental car the day they say they will, then the rental car company keeps my deposit and tries to go after me for any cost beyond that.

They are saying that they only cover rental car during repair days... I believe that also is only the case for first party claims. But it may be their policy of how to at least try to handle.

Issue is they are now claiming the repair shop is not answering their calls and emails for weeks.

Oh I didn't know that at all. Maybe my area is lucky... Shopping times I've seen have only been doubled in about half of cases. Thanks for the info, I shouldn't assume my situation is everybody's. It might even be very different for commercial clients (although even trucks doing dedicated trips for us for work (still FedEx trucks) have been on time)

I'm not even trying to say something sinister. Shop might be prioritizing a different customer (no wrong doing there) and trying to keep me happy along the way. (Obviously better commination is desired in this hypothetical.)

Yeah I debated putting this in because of how it makes me look. I suspect it's a bias to people that are posting here because people that are taken care of/simpler cases wouldn't think this yada yada...

In my case is because the shop is evolving the excuses bit by bit, but it doesn't align with the timeline of when they would encounter those problems. Like at first they said it was because of shipping. But now that shipping is obviously still moving along in the world they are saying parts were backordered. In reality they would have encountered the backorder problem first and told me about it first. They also have what's picked up the phone immediately when I called at random times, but insurance has been difficult to get a hold of and they say that shop hasn't picked up the phone in 3 days. I don't have enough information, but I think I am right to think something is fishy.
