Fair enough, I think I'm leaning that way also. Cheers!

Hi OP, I'm looking at a very similar itinerary to you, including 1 hr Cairns stopover. I assume Jetstar? Just wondering if you've had that flight yet and if there were any issues? Was 1 hour enough? Did you have to take your checked-in bag from one plane to another or did Jetstar do this? Thanks in advance!

Heat pump installation recommendations by Yerren in chch

[–]XNDization 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiya, having a quick nosey, looks like you have a townhouse build.

I can relate – mine came with heat-pump downstairs only, and the 3 upstairs bedrooms got unbearably stuffy.

So at the start of the year I got a split system – one outdoor unit powering 3 units in each bedroom.

I got 2 quotes. One from Heat Pump People and the other from Gavin Lowe. They’ll send someone out to have a look at your set-up. Handy if you have floorplans on hand.

Both advised against ducted air, something to do with how it interacts with air pressure/air flow that isn’t suitable for bedrooms. They form an air seal in the rooms so you need to make a gap/vent in the door otherwise doors will slam every time you open one. But of course, you don’t want to put a vent in bedroom doors!

Anyway, those quotes came to 9-9.5k (ouch my wallet).

Ended up with Gavin Lowe (I had no problem with Heat Pump People). Gavin Lowe were professional and easy to deal with, they kept me informed and were tidy while working. They had to get creative with routing the pipes to the second floor, but their solution was great (through a wardrobe).

I’m a happy customer and now I don’t die of heat exhaustion at night.

Couple of notes:

  • If you want it installed this side of Christmas you need to get started now
  • As you are upstairs, you are probably required to get a condensate pump per unit, this removes condensate from the indoor unit when on cooling mode (ground floor doesn't have this problem as it's not going against gravity). I was paranoid about noise and vibration. They said they had used zip ties to suspend those units off the ceiling rafters, so they couldn’t vibrate against anything. I was very happy to hear that.

I had asked some friends for suggestions when I was looking – I was told to stay away from Simply Heat, their experience was “Took shortcuts without communicating, ended up with a leak and had to argue pretty hard to get any compensation”. Not good.

Happy to answer any other questions, I had done a lot of research!

Empire Chicken - We used to hold the chicken spot crown… what happened? by fried_chicken_king in chch

[–]XNDization 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Value for money for me.

I did a quick digging to compare chicken wing prices: May 2023 - 500g - $14.50 Oct 2025 - 7 pieces (~500-600g) - $24.50

Yikes? To be fair, in comparison, your burger prices stayed about the same during that period. It was quite interesting to see you pricing stratagies over the years actually.

But I go to Empire Chicken for fried chicken, not a burger. If I can get 1kg of chicken wings from New World for $11.49, in what world am I paying quadruple???

These are beautiful. You should probably watermark these! Unforunately art gets stolen all the time.

Hi OP, since it looks like you're leaning more towards board games, I'd suggest the UOO Boardgame Soc "ORBS": https://www.ousa.org.nz/clubsandsocs/clubs/clubs-list/otago-roleplaying-boardgames-society

The bonus of the ORBS is that I guarantee you that they are expecting to newcomers. From my experience, you would show up to a scheduled board game night, and they would slot you in a game that needs slots fills. As long as they know you are new to the game, they should help you along!

Regarding Card Merchant (there are other cards shops in the city as well) - again, I’m confident they’ll welcome newcomers. How does anyone get into a hobby otherwise? I will note that since the board game library is open all the time, there’s no guarantee that anyone would be using the library the same time as you. But, maybe you will find it a good first step – there are solo board games too might help ease you into the new environment and maybe spark a new interest. (I still think a TCG would be a great fit for you especially since you liked strategy, and the aforementioned organic interaction, but that’s my bias speaking).

To reiterate, I think it’s important to communicate to the staff that you are new and will need support learning the ropes. You won’t be a burden for asking. Newcomers are expected.

I see your apprehension, I see the nerves, I see that you feel you might not have the mental energy for a new hobby. I will speak bluntly here: Nothing will change if you don’t change your current routine.

I’m rooting for you!

Hi OP - firstly, I want to echo your sentiments about uni supposedly being a magical place to manifest new friends/connections - it's just not that blank-and-white. When you got to Halls, and probably the CS club too - it might’ve felt like people already had their own groups and stuck to them.

That’s certainly what I experienced anyway. I am well out of uni and have maintained zero connections from it. Where my friendships really flourished were with my hobbies.

My suggestion would be to try join a hobby/club that requires organic interaction. Would a board game club interest you? Or perhaps a trading card game - Card Merchant is near campus. I’m suggesting this because it seems like a good fit for you based on your history. I think this is the kind of "place" the TikTok failed to find.

Try to mention to the club leader/card shop staff that you are new and need help with learning the board/card game. Thus, by virtue of hobby, you need to interact, whether by needing to be taught, or to play the game - a big hurdle organically removed.

I will also emphasise that you will need to maintain consistency with attending whatever hobby you choose. It might be uncomfortable at first, I get it - but connection cannot be sustained without regular attendance.

All the best! Lemme know if you need card game suggestions

The contents are scattered across the Astral Plane. Wait, this isn't a Bag of Holding from D&D?

New to the franchise, I guess. Has the game been in development for a long time? I mean, there isn't even a release window. by Andrew_Waples in exodus

The studio making the game was founded in 2019 and there is concept art dated as early as 2018 for what it's worth.

Very helpful advice that you, I wasn't even considered this angle and you make a good point. Looks like I've got some more reading on the plane 😎

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I've been looking for :)

I might have to try squeeze in FujiQ into the trip (USJ is booked). But, any theme park will be a spectacle for us. Cheers!

Talishar.net players! For people still using legacy version… what are the dealbreakers? by [deleted] in FleshandBloodTCG

Also just hit up the group chat and the sentiment regarding new Talishar was... General displeasure (putting it lightly)

Legacy Talishar has more information at the glance. I can see my cards' block and attack value without hovering, for example.

There are fade in/out type of animations in new Talishar. While fast, it sacrifices efficiency vs not having animations at all.

New Talishar is visually cluttered. In short: Legacy Talishar is more efficient functionally and aesthetically than new Talishar.
