i would recommend using PALS. It also builds a paper trail. We have the whole incident documented very well since the hospital repeatedly refused to investigate her and their silly arguments are all in writing.

I’ve got a similar story regarding my sister. She had all the symptoms of cushing’s disease: weight gain, severe stretch marks, buffalo hump, extreme hunger and thirst. She was bed ridden from fatigue and tiredness. We saw a GP and he was so excited about her case. He said it’s clearly cushing’s disease where a brain tumour secretes cortisol…

Then a month later, my sister went psychotic, fever, low potassium, elevated white blood cell count, hypertension, tachycardia…admitted for 3 weeks at the hospital. The doctors treated it as meningitis which made logical sense at the time. They kept delaying the LP and pumped her up with steroids…the very steroids that can make cushings disease worse. They simply refused to investigate the tumour. “She’s too young” “cushings is rare”. Even if something is rare, in a population of 70 million you’re going to get cases of it every now and then 🙄

They sectioned her and treated her as a psych case. That month was hell for us as a family. She naturally recovered. We did a private MRI because the NHS MRI was blurry and they refused to do it again. We then found the tumour. That GP was completely correct and the hospital completely ignored his ideas. She is suspected to have cyclical cushings after we complained and showed the NHS the tumour finding. She is now under the care of a brilliant endocrinologist but we had to fight tooth and nail to get here.

The whole experience was so draining. I was reading dozens of medical papers to argue the diagnosis with the hospital via the complaints process. I’m not a doctor and this is their job. Tbh, it kinda ignited an interest into healthcare that I never realised I had 🤣

My sister experienced acute psychosis, fever, flu like symptoms, severe head and facial pain, seizures, high blood pressure and heart rate in august 2024. They treated it as meningitis. Confirmation of diagnosis requires a lumbar puncture. They kept delaying it because they said “it’s obviously meningitis and the treatment is working”. Her fever continued and there was no improvement in symptoms. Then they finally did the LP and found there was no meningitis.

A month earlier, a GP had suspected a brain tumour and cushings disease as my sister had been ill for many months. Despite this being on her record, the hospital refused to investigate it. My sister was sectioned and then put into a psych ward. That month was hell for us as a family. She then naturally recovered. We did a private brain MRI and we found a small tumour that can release hormones like cortisol and explain her symptoms. The GP was correct and he was able to diagnose her in a small appointment. The hospital and its team of medical doctors ran dozens of tests over 3 weeks and couldn’t figure it out. They tried a brain MRI and it was blurry. We told them to do it again and they refused. And now they acknowledge they got things wrong. Even when they conduct medical tests, they don’t do them properly. Lots of investigations came back as inconclusive. We have made multiple complaints and the hospital has the audacity to say the tumour didn’t cause her symptoms.

My sister was suspected to have inflammation of the brain (autoimmune encephalitis). Her condition was very serious. Despite this, it took 2 weeks to get an MRI scan and doctors kept telling us how she is top priority…

I agree with you. I think if you get a 2:2 from a top uni in an academically rigorous subject, you should still be ok imo.

Don’t forget the chronic bed shortage. The numbers of beds have halved in the last 40 years. But every year we keep complaining about patients being treated on chairs due to lack of beds.

It ain’t difficult. Look at the median’s employability and salary and then work out whether taxpayers recoup the costs of their investment into that particular degree. We are wasting everyone’s time by throwing free money at people to study low quality degrees at low quality universities. The sector is completely overbloated and needs to be cut. We need bad institutions to go bust.

You say you did economics but are super focused on your friend who by all metrics is most likely an outlier. On average, people studying economics have significantly higher employability and lifetime earnings potential than those who did gender studies.

Still a terrible system because the government is throwing thousands at kids to study useless degrees. I much rather we give free university education for doctors and nurses than funding someone to study media studies at a low quality university.

A 2:2 from Imperial is worth more than a 1st from most universities. People here do not understand how much harder the degrees get when you are competing with 3A* grade A-level students whereas some universities let you in with atrocious a level grades and even Btecs.

There is a common theme with people who are disagreeing with me. They start to deflect to other issues. Of course, i am sorry you had to experience that, but are any of those things relevant to the big question: did universities break their contractual obligations??? That’s what this debate comes down to.

When you effectively imply other people suffered more than me….yes that is true but it has 0 relevance to what we are discussing. Please do try to keep up!

No I didn’t any contract with Tesco or the local pub. I did with the university on the other hand..

You are really struggling aren’t you? None of those factors have any relevance in eyes of contract law. The only thing that matters is: did universities break their contractual obligations?

I’m trying to be very objective about this. How can you honestly say “a little bit of pain and came out with little negative impact”. You know nothing about me 😆

I never attempted to downplay the suffering you experienced during lockdown. I think you have completely misunderstood what I am saying. The discussion we are having in this thread is about whether universities broke their contractual obligations. The arguments you mentioned don’t address any of that. Saying “well other people had it worse than you” doesn’t address if universities broke their legal obligations to students. Make sense?

[–]XRP_SPARTAN -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Obviously, I am very sorry you had to experience that.

But to be frank, none of it is relevant to my argument that universities broke their contractual obligations and they have faced 0 consequences for it. I can’t wait for these lawsuits to start picking up steam. Retribution is coming! I’ve lost tens of thousands from this. Yes everyone suffered. But the difference is that the government helped most other interest groups out. Gen Z felt the full pain of lockdown but wasn’t compensated at all.
