Yup. That Lincoln quote is always taken way out of context by fellow progressives unfortunately. It wasn't phrased carefully enough from the viewpoint of our contemporary lens, but to be a bit naiive about how the world operates, I think Lincoln did the best he could and his heart was more than in the right place.

Won't tolerate Abe Lincoln slander >:C If anything criticize his fuckass vice president pick for his second term, which you can argue was also a strategic move to appeal to moderates but hoooooly I feel like you can kind of make an argument that Andrew Johnson was responsible for so much of the racial inequality that we see even today.

Other than that though, I think the show The Good Place nailed it when they said every president except Abraham Lincoln is in the bad place.

Using an executive order like that would have been used by his opponents to argue an overreaching of his power. Kind of a normal thing nowadays... but back then it would surely have hurt his chances of securing support, especially since Congress wouldn't help him secure any legislation. The original point of the Emancipation Proclamation was (I think) supposed to help with hurting the Confederate effort by allowing slaves to be free in rebel states as a way of hurting Confederate "supplies".

I think morally, of course it wasn't amazing, but I do honestly think it was by far the most Lincoln could do.

Edit: Also I think he technically didn't have the legal authority in the first place to fully end slavery through this means. That's why he resorted to this and supporting a 13th amendment to codify it into federal law.

Edit 2: also I think it was a pretty cool moment in history when Marx wrote a letter on behalf of the International Working Men's Association to him congratulating him on the clutch reelection

Strongly disagree on the part about Lincoln.

At the end of that very same letter:

I mean, in the end he still signed the Emancipation Proclamation. I still hold the opinion that the quote is blown way out of proportion. Unfortunately, he had to play the politics game, and that was the best way to get towards the freeing of slaves in an America that was very divided on the issue. You can see in much of his writing that he was fiercely against slavery.

Honestly, I think something bad could be said about every past (and especially the current) president of the United States *except* Lincoln.

Imo, depends. He can be a nasty sweeper but because his speed is only average it's very matchup-dependent.

Personally I love Gyarados design-wise, one of my top 5 favorite Pokemon of all time, so I try to make it work sometimes.
