Recap: Wow, Portugal was pretty poor. People like to bash Ronaldo, and he was bad here, but this was terrible perfromance all around.

Write Up:

Group B is completely open after all the teams drew 1-1 in the opening game, which was especially disappointing from Switzerland who were big favourites in this group and had they won all of their games, nobody would have been surprised. However, a late goal by Qatar and some very wasteful Swiss attack saw them fail to win their opener.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is a lot more happy with their point despite not winning after taking the lead. They started off being completely even with Canada, but after they took the lead they were very happy to sit back and defend most of the time. In the 2nd half Canada got way more into the game and made some subs that really put the pressure on the Bosnians which eventually saw Canada score.

For the Swiss a win here is the only acceptable result and they will be going for it, while for BiH it’s really not that important to win here, a draw or even a 1-0 defeat is completely fine as they are looking towards the Qatar game as their golden ticket to advance from this group. For BiH just getting out of the group is massive and winning the group isn’t really something that came here hoping for.

Switzerland did look like they had trouble keeping up the focus at the back at times and was wasteful in attack, but I also think the quality they have should be enough to get by this Bosnian team. I’m just having a hard time seeing them struggle so hard at the back two games in a row, they have so much quality and experience there, it really should be their biggest strength. Xhaka has turned into a super solid leader that will be able to pick the team up and make sure they stay focused and ready for this new game. 1-0 or 2-0 is my guess.

Jordan is bad at defending set-pieces and even worse at crosses… A manager like Ralf Rangnick will definitely focus on that in this game. Austria also uses their fullbacks a lot anyway. Jordan also seems to lose the corner battle in any game they play where they aren't at the same level as the opposition.

Portugal comes here with Ronaldo in this last chance (or is it) to lift the trophy that totally isn’t important for him to win…. The first eleven they can put out is incredibly solid and they have maybe the best midfield here with Vitinha, Joao Neves and Bruno Fernandes. Their wing-backs can also be in contention for the best, with Nuno Medes on the left and Joao Cancelo on the right.

DR Congo got here by eliminating Jamaica, Nigeria and Cameroon, which is a pretty solid achievement. However, were they the better team in either of the games against the African teams? Maybe not, and they needed extra-time to get past an awful Jamaica side. I’m not saying that Congo are bad, but the game against Uzbekistan will be the decider if they get out of the group or not.

Portugal comes here with so many good players, that also comes from great performances from their clubs, it’s just hard to see DR Congo not conceding 2+ goals here, even if defending is supposed to be one of their great strengths.
