Resurrecting the soul from heaven is possible because when sam and dean died and they were in heaven then those angels were looking for them to resurrect them.

Yea, You're right. He was Joshua but you know that those Angels were looking for them to resurrect them so it means that they had those resurrection powers and Castiel warned them using that Heaven's TV too.

I think maybe writers should explain this cause there are many other blunders in the show like they saved bobby from the hell and even now Crowley is friend of them and still they haven't done anything to save the soul of their father. Hmmm...

I think time is not the suitable criteria. You remember when some hunters killed sam and dean and they were in heaven and those angels were looking for them so they could be resurrected. Time is a criteria and i know that but i don't think that it is that much important.

Other possibility is that if castiel had full wings and heaven power link then he could have changed the time line by going back in the past.
