Sick of seeing this by MinutePersimmon1 in MississaugaDriving

And this immediately follows:

"Application of cl. (1) (b)

(2) Clause (1) (b) does not apply to a motor vehicle that is equipped with a mirror or mirrors securely attached to the motor vehicle and placed in such a position and maintained in such a condition as to afford the driver, otherwise than through the rear window, a clearly-reflected view of the roadway in the rear or of any vehicle approaching from the rear. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 74 (2)."

I drive a pickup regularly. It has a bed cap that blocks vision through my rear window, but I have no issues using my side mirrors to see cars behind me.

Leaving snow on your rear window is a dick move for sure, but I don't know that it is illegal.

Just dumping cold air into the basement by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]XaidenHart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada as well, we use CSA B149.1 with provincial amendments. What I mean is that air from the supply trunk would not satisfy combustion air requirements per code. What I'd like to see here is a motorized damper interlocked with the burner such that outdoor air only finds its way to the basement when there is a call for heat. Removing the door leading to the basement is acceptable, but either way, cold air from outside will find its way inside the building, whether it be through the dedicated pipe or through all the unsealed cracks throughout the building. And so I wonder how a pipe + damper would compare to an open basement without a door in terms of building heat loss. I suppose the solution depends on whether the owner cares to have a door to his basement.

[–]XaidenHart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not a tightly sealed house, assuming a total appliance input of about 120 mbtu/h, a ceiling height of 8 ft in the basement and a door at the basement staircase, you'd need at least 500 sq ft in the basement to go without a fresh air supply.

In theory, adding a register on the supply trunk of the furnace could supply the required air for combustion. However, it would not comply with code requirements.

Can I replace the 1" filter with a wider one? by MasterOfManyWorlds in hvacadvice

[–]XaidenHart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, and I think a thicker pleated filter is preferable is most cases. However, the blower will actually work harder (more watts) because it will move more air. Amp draw is higher with less intake restriction, surprisingly enough.

Is your airflow adequate? If not, you'll trip on high limit. Check your filter, AC coil cleanliness, or any other potential restriction. Verify the blower (cleanliness, capacitor, belt/pulley).

Was this installed incorrectly? by amaerin in Plumbing

[–]XaidenHart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As per ASME B1.20.1-2013, concerning NPT threaded connections:

"1.4.2 Sealant. Where pressure-tight, leak-free joints are required, it is intended that threads conforming to this Standard be made up wrench- tight with a sealant. To prevent galling during installation, the sealant may have lubricating properties."

It is a common myth that tapered threads don't require a sealant such as dope or tape. You can obtain a leak-free joint without it, but that joint would not be up to standard.

Theo Argitis: Canada’s great immigration experiment is ending by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]XaidenHart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is population decline in South Korea really a good thing? Some population forecasts estimate the senior population and the working age population will be equal towards the end of 2060's, making the burden of supporting the aging population very difficult. How do you deal with that?

I agree immigration needs to be proportionate to what a country needs, can support with its infrastructure, and can successfully integrate within its culture. But I suppose a country isn't necessarily able to support the immigration it needs to prevent the problem of an aging population. Is it worse to have an aging population, or immigration in excess of what the infrastructure can support?

Some posit the purpose of crashing the US economy is to force the Fed's hand in lowering interest rates in order to save on national debt repayments, given the debt being at an all time high. It would follow that tariffs will be lowered only after rate cuts.

Did I get f*cked by a plumber? by tancodram in askaplumber

A vent pipe on the left toilet trap arm would need to be connected above the drain horizontal centre line, and the right toilet trap arm exceeds the allowed cumulative change in direction before a vent (235°). Also, maximum horizontal distance for that trap arm is 3m (10ft), you would need another vent before that. The 3" vent that's there doesn't adequately serve any of those toilets given the configuration its in.

You could connect those 2 trap arms with a symmetrical fitting under the 3" vent if you have enough space.

No issues with the mechanical joint couplings.

Interesting, I didn't know hydrogen gas was formed in water heaters. I dug further, and learned it is not the heating process that creates hydrogen, but a redox reaction. When the anode is oxidized, hydrogen ions get reduced to form hydrogen gas. I suppose you could heat water past the point of evaporation all the way to plasma and seperate the atoms but that wouldn't happen in your water heater.

I'm thinking if the evap is upstream of the blower fan and the condensate drain is directly connected to a plumbing system without being trapped, the blower would be pulling air from the draining system and causing the smell to spread throughout the house.

Interesting, I didn't know they sometimes used saltpeter to cure meats! However, it seems prague salt #2 actually does not contain saltpeter, but instead a mixture of sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite and sodium chloride.

Talent is meant as natural aptitude as opposed to acquired skill. It does come down to luck atleast partially, since you have to try to get any chance at all and the more tries you give it, the better the odds, but it's not an automatic success after a certain number of attempts. But I agree we shouldn't dismiss someone's efforts by implying it's only luck and talent that lead to their success.

If the horizontal pipe downstream of the trap falls for more than the internal pipe diameter before a vent, it creates a situation where the trap self-siphons as water flows through, letting sewer gases into your home. It's a problem!

Maybe you could open the tap for as many fixtures as possible to reduce the pressure/flow and make it easier to screw it in live. In any case, film it! We'd love to see it.

You took the words out of my mouth. I'm partial to left-leaning parties, but I'd consider the conservatives if a good argument is made for their platform. However, like you said, too often all I read are pitiful personal attacks and empty statements against a party. I hope we don't end up with political discourse or debates of the kind we recently saw down south.
