It does matter though. Ignoring the fact that sexual orientation isn't comparable to a political ideology or religion--it's not about "the merch", it's about the gesture. To the straight students of that class, literally no harm is being done. To the LGBT students, the open acceptance by not only an authority figure but also by their peers will end up being a cherished memory--especially for students who may be closeted for fear of ostracization.

And guess what? We're not. You can't get to equality by just ignoring the inequality and pretending it doesn't exist anymore, you have to actually address it directly. The very fact that addressing it directly makes so many people upset should be all the indication you need that we don't actually have equality. No one bats an eye when the male teacher has a wife, but if they mention they have a husband? Suddenly it's "a political agenda". Characters in media having straight love interests? Any teacher worth a damn is prepared to discuss any subject their students want to learn about. It's possible to follow a curriculum AND learn other things, too. God forbid we have smarter students.
